Football: Ozil leads five-star Arsenal past Bournemouth

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil made the most of being handed a rare start by Arsenal boss Unai Emery as the German masterminded a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday (Feb 27) to keep the Gunners in pole position for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Ozil opened the scoring after just four minutes before turning provider for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double Arsenal's lead.
Lys Mousset briefly gave Bournemouth hope before half-time, but Ozil and Mkhitaryan combined once more to tee up Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-1 before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette rounded off an eighth straight Premier League win at the Emirates for Emery's men.
The Spanish coach has been reluctant to use Arsenal's highest earner in his debut season in charge as Ozil was making just his second league start of the year.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder showed why Arsenal handed him a contract worth a reported £350,000 a week last January by rolling back the years as the link-up between him and Mkhitaryan questioned why they had not started together in the Premier League since November.
Emery now has a welcome selection headache for Saturday's crucial north London derby away to Tottenham on whether to stick with Ozil and Mkhitaryan, while Aubameyang and Lacazette are also in top form and vying for a place up front.
Arsenal were helped along the way by some feeble Bournemouth defending as the Cherries succumbed to a 10 consecutive away defeat.
Artur Boruc should have got a stronger hand to Ozil's shot that bounced over the Polish goalkeeper to give the hosts a perfect start.
At the other end, Arsenal's own defensive deficiencies were also on show at times as only a fine save from Bernd Leno denied Ryan Fraser an equaliser before Dan Gosling's follow-up effort was bravely blocked by Matteo Guendouzi.
Bournemouth caused their own problems again in the build-up to Arsenal's second as Adam Smith gifted possession to Mkhitaryan, but it was still brilliantly pounced upon as the Armenian exchanged passes with Ozil before slotting into an empty net.
A hint of complacency cost Arsenal moments later when Guendouzi was caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Gosling and he squared for Mousset to roll into an empty net.
However, Arsenal clicked through the gears after the break and put the game to bed before the hour mark.
The Ozil-Mkhitaryan connection again opened up Bournemouth down Arsenal's right and Mkhitaryan picked out Koscielny, whose shot deflected in off Nathan Ake.
Mkhitaryan was the creator again for the fourth when his through ball freed Aubameyang in behind the Bournemouth defence and the Gabon striker stayed cool to round Boruc and slot home his 19th goal of the season.
A start for Aubameyang meant Lacazette had to settle for a place on the bench, but the French international still had time to add his 14th of the campaign with a brilliant free-kick 12 minutes from time.

Football: Angry Sarri storms out of Chelsea training before Europa League final

BAKU (AFP) - Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri stormed off in anger after television cameras caught Gonzalo Higuain and David Luiz clashing at a training session in Baku ahead of Wednesday's (May 29) Europa League final.
Sarri was seen throwing away his Chelsea baseball cap, kicking it and then picking it up and angrily slamming it to the ground as he left the pitch at the Baku Olympic Stadium, where the final against Arsenal will be played.
The whole training session was open to media and so television cameras caught the incident, which does not bode well for Chelsea in the lead up to the match.
Sarri's reaction came not long after he had spoken of how he "loved" his players and English football, comments that suggested a departure from Stamford Bridge after just one season may not be inevitable.
The former Napoli boss has been strongly linked with a return to Italy to take the vacant coaching position at champions Juventus.
"I want to think only to the final. I have a contract with Chelsea for two years, so first of all I will speak with Chelsea, but now is not the moment," Sarri said of the Juventus speculation at a press conference in Baku on Tuesday.
The 60-year-old could replace the departing Massimiliano Allegri in Turin after a difficult season in London, and reports have said that Chelsea would not block his departure.
However, he insists his first season in charge after arriving from Napoli can be classified as a success regardless of what happens at the imposing Olympic Stadium here.
He did not lose a Premier League game until late November and despite his team's form tailing off after that, they still finished third, ahead of both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, to secure a return to the Champions League.
In addition, they only lost the League Cup final on penalties against Manchester City, and now have the chance to win the Europa League for the second time in seven seasons.
"For me at the beginning of the season it was really very difficult to understand my players, to understand the mentality, but after a very difficult month in January, in February they started to change," he said.
"In this moment I love them because I have 22 wonderful men and wonderful players so I'm really happy with them and of course I have to consider it for the future and I have to consider that I love English football, I love the Premier League."
Sarri added that winning the Europa League - which would be his first major honour - would turn a "very good season" into a "wonderful" one.
"We have had ups and downs, but from the downs we have become stronger, we built a stronger group and that is one of the reasons why we are here tonight," said skipper Cesar Azpilicueta.
"I think we all deserve to do tomorrow a good game, to play with our heart, to give everything.
"We missed the Carabao (League) Cup final on penalties in an unlucky way so tomorrow we have a good opportunity to be happy all together with the manager. There is no time to talk about this speculation."

Ajax bemoan letting final slip from their grasp

Ajax bemoan letting final slip from their grasp

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Ajax Amsterdam coach Erik ten Hag described their semi-final exit from the Champions League as "very cruel" after the Dutch side were undone by Lucas Moura's 96th minute strike for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday (May 8).
"Football can be very beautiful and it can be very cruel. We have had to experience that today," said Ten Hag, whose young side appeared to be heading for a final showdown with Liverpool on June 1 in Madrid until Moura's last-gasp strike shattered their dreams.
Having lost the first leg in London 1-0, Tottenham secured their place in the final thanks to a hat-trick from Moura which completed a 3-2 win on the night. With the encounter ending 3-3 on aggregate, Spurs emerged triumphant on the away goals rule.
The result ended Ajax's long, and barely plausible, ride through three preliminary rounds, starting in July, to the last four of the competition.
During that incredible run, they had knocked out holders Real Madrid and Juventus and on Wednesday were seconds away from a place in the final - until it all ended in heartache.
"Overall we had a fantastic Champions League campaign, we were one second away from the final and for that our team deserves a very big compliment, I'm very proud of my players," said Ten Hag.

But the coach admitted that they let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers having been 3-0 ahead on aggregate with 45 minutes left to play.
"If you're 2-0 up, you have to make sure you win the game, and we failed to do that. In the first phase after halftime we lost our grip on the game, they played a more opportunistic game," he said.
"But after the score was level at 2-2 we dominated again and we created chances.
"It's very bitter that none of those went in, and that they scored a very fortunate goal in the last seconds, maybe even past what should have the last second."
Defender Daley Blind described the defeat as "a dream that had burst" while teenaged captain Matthijs de Ligt called it "a nightmare".
"What am I supposed to say? It's terrible. We were so close. This is a dream that has burst apart," said Blind.
De Ligt added: "It's a nightmare, like a dream that went bad.
"We played well in the first half, we had it all our way. We didn't keep up the same pressure in the second half.
"We gave silly goals away. We were so close to the final … and then the ball goes in. Unbelievable."

Football: DC United's Wayne Rooney sees red for first time in MLS as Rossi nets hat-trick in LAFC's 4-0 win

(REUTERS) - Wayne Rooney was sent off for the first time in Major League Soccer (MLS) after the DC United forward made a poorly-timed lunging tackle on Los Angeles FC striker Diego Rossi on Saturday (April 6).
The 33-year-old, in his second season with DC United, lost control of the ball and lunged with both feet off the ground just as Rossi took a touch. His studs landed hard on Rossi's leg, just below the knee, scything down the Uruguayan.
The referee initially produced a yellow card but following a check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he changed his decision and showed the former England international a straight red card.
"I have no arguments," Rooney, who is England's leading scorer, told reporters. "It wasn't malicious, I didn't try to hurt him.
"But obviously I caught him. I was expecting (a red card) really when the referee gave me the yellow. It's the right call."
It was Rooney's first red card since 2014 and the seventh of his career for club and country. DC United, who were 3-0 down at the time, lost 4-0 as Rossi completed a hat-trick.

Football: Everton dish out 4-0 thrashing to awful Manchester United to dim their top-four EPL hopes

(REUTERS) - A woeful Manchester United suffered their fifth straight away defeat, in all competitions, with a 4-0 English Premier League hammering at the hands of a vibrant Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday (April 21).
United did not manage a shot on target until the 86th minute as they fell to their sixth loss in eight games since their memorable victory at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.
The euphoria felt in Paris and at the start of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign already seems a distant memory after a United performance that lacked not only quality but aggression and fire.
"We just didn't perform. That was not worthy of a Manchester United team," said Solskjaer.
"We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club," added the Norwegian, who went over to the travelling United support after the final whistle.
"Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result. Talent has never been enough."
Brazilian Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead in the 13th minute with an acrobatic high volley after Dominic Calvert-Lewin flicked on a long throw.
Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 with a low drive from over 25 yards out that United goalkeeper David de Gea was slow to react to.
Lucas Digne then blasted in the third in the 56th minute after the Spaniard punched out a corner to the French full-back as United struggled to get even a foot in the game.
Icelandic playmaker Sigurdsson then put substitute Theo Walcott through with a clever pass through the legs of Victor Lindelof which the former Arsenal striker confidently converted.
That concluded a miserable week for United, eliminated from the Champions League by Barcelona on Tuesday, remain in sixth, outside the four qualification spots for next season's campaign. They are two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal (66) having played a game more.
Everton next play at Crystal Palace on Saturday, while United must now somehow pick themselves up in time for the visit of champions Manchester City to Old Trafford for the derby on Wednesday - a game that will help decide the destination of the Premier League title.
For Marco Silva's improving Everton, in seventh place, this was their third top-six scalp in as many home games following victories over Chelsea and Arsenal.
The first goal was the key," said Sigurdsson.
"After that we defended really well. It was important for us to get the next goal after going 2-0 up. It gave us constant belief and we controlled the game after that," he added.
The Red Devils had not lost five straight away games since 1981 and they ran 8.03 km less than Everton.

Football: Benzema double helps Madrid win hectic game at Valladolid

VALLADOLID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid ended a three-game losing streak by winning 4-1 at Real Valladolid in a chaotic game on Sunday (March 10) in which the hosts had two goals ruled out, missed a penalty and hit the woodwork while the visitors had Casemiro sent off late on.
Karim Benzema scored twice after the interval with a penalty and a header from a corner to give Santiago Solari's side a 3-1 lead, after Raphael Varane struck in the 34th minute to cancel out Anuar Tuhami's goal for Valladolid five minutes earlier.
Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric then showed his class to stretch Madrid's lead in the 85th after Casemiro was dismissed for earning two bookings.
Modric's goal completed a highly entertaining and eventful match at the Jose Zorilla stadium, which experienced a power cut before kick off, although the game began on schedule.
The victory is unlikely to extend Argentine Solari's stay as coach, with reports in the Spanish media predicting he will be sacked on Monday having only taken the reins in mid-November.
Madrid had endured one of their worst ever weeks before the game, exiting the Champions League in the last 16 with a 4-1 home defeat by Ajax Amsterdam after sustaining successive losses to Barcelona which ended their hopes of winning any silverware.
Sunday's win took Madrid to 49 points and they are 12 adrift of leaders Barca and five behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.

MISSING PLAYERS

Solari's first game in charge of Real in La Liga was against Valladolid back in November and on that occasion his side also rode their luck, winning 2-0 with goals in the final 10 minutes after the visitors had hit the woodwork twice.
Real had a total of six players unavailable for this game including Gareth Bale, Vinicius Jr, Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal and captain Sergio Ramos, but Solari still left Spain international Isco out of his matchday squad.
Valladolid made a determined start and were awarded a penalty when Oscar Plano's shirt was tugged by Alvaro Odriozola, but Ruben Alcaraz blazed over the bar from the spot - the fifth penalty in a row his side have squandered this season.
Valladolid forward Sergi Guardiola then had two efforts ruled out for offside in the space of two minutes after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews.
However, the striker played a big part in Valladolid finally taking the lead, sliding to meet a cross at the far post and rolling the ball towards Anuar who tapped in from close range.
Madrid levelled thanks to some sloppy goalkeeping from Valladolid's former Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip, who lost an aerial contest with Nacho, and Varane calmly knocked the loose ball over the line into the net with his studs.
The goal killed Valladolid's momentum and while Madrid did not sparkle in the second half, their superior quality shone through with Benzema's double and Modric's classy finish.

Football: Lewandowski brace seals German Cup and domestic double for Bayern

BERLIN (AFP) - Robert Lewandowski scored a brace as Bayern Munich wrapped up a domestic double with a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on Saturday (May 25).
Goals from Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman sealed victory for Bayern in an enthralling game at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The win sees Bayern lift the golden German Cup trophy for the 19th time in their history, just a week after securing a seventh successive Bundesliga title last Saturday.
Both sides probed rather frantically for an opener in the first half, and Manuel Neuer denied Yussuf Poulsen with a reflex save on ten minutes.
It was Bayern who broke the deadlock, though, Lewandowski flicking in a superb header after a fine move on the left from Coman and David Alaba.
Coman had a free run at goal and rounded goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi shortly before half-time, but his shot was cleared on the line by Ibrahima Konate.
Emil Forsberg had a similar chance for Leipzig just after the break, but came off second best in a one-on-one with Neuer.

A breathless second half saw chance after chance fall at either end, until Coman's 77th minute strike put Bayern out of reach.
The Frenchman found the top corner after elegantly bringing down a loose ball in the penalty area.
He later came off for departing veteran Franck Ribery, who was making his final appearance for Bayern alongside fellow winger Arjen Robben.
By that point it was already 3-0, as Lewandowski had broken free of the back line and lifted the ball over Gulacsi to secure victory five minutes from time.
