Bale could be among first out the door as Zidane rebuilds

MADRID • There will be a clear-out in the summer as Zinedine Zidane gets his considerable rebuilding job under way at Real Madrid.
Gareth Bale has been one of the big names, along with Isco and Toni Kroos, heavily rumoured to be heading out of the exit door.
On Saturday, the Welsh forward again put on a lacklustre display to show that there will be few tears shed should he leave the Santiago Bernabeu in the close season.
Karim Benzema scored twice at home as Real beat Eibar 2-1 in LaLiga after Marc Cardona had given the visitors a surprise lead.
The opening hour had, however, been full of groans and whistles - mostly directed at Bale, who was in the starting line-up after being dropped for the 2-1 defeat by Valencia on Wednesday, with Nacho, Isco and Federico Valverde also coming into the side.
And post-game, Zidane appeared to be lukewarm over the Wales player's future, cryptically telling reporters "we will see".
Asked whether Bale was part of his plans going forward, the Frenchman said: "I'm not going to tell you what's going to happen. Gareth is a Real Madrid player, he has two years left on his contract. It is not the time to talk about this."

League goal Gareth Bale has scored in the last five games. Karim Benzema has shouldered the scoring load with six goalsin his last five games.

The 29-year-old's below-par performances and a lack of support from either coach or fans seem so inter-linked now that it is difficult to know what comes first.
He departed the field again to jeers with 14 minutes left, a conciliatory hand slap from his manager offering little consolation as he trudged off.
His abject form has been in stark contrast to Benzema, whose upward trajectory has seen him nab six goals in five LaLiga games, four of them since Zidane took over the hot seat last month in his second spell at the club.
Hailing the French striker's "great season", the 1998 World Cup winner said: "His goals have perhaps changed people's perception of him. But he has never changed as a player."
Real's win, coupled with Atletico Madrid's loss to Barcelona, means Zidane's men are only two points behind their cross-town rivals with seven games left to play.
However, Zidane admitted "playing for nothing is difficult" with no silverware on the line and merely pride at stake.
The 46-year-old told Spanish daily Marca: "This season, we will not win anything, we know that."

Football: Apologetic Spurs boss Pochettino accepts FA improper conduct charge

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino humbly chastised himself for unacceptable behaviour towards referee Mike Dean and accepted the misconduct charge levelled at him by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday (Feb 26).
The 46-year-old Argentinian said that having watched replays of his heated exchange with Dean following the 2-1 defeat by Burnley on Saturday - highly damaging to his side's title hopes - he could offer no defence.
"Watching my behaviour afterwards on video, I need to accept the charge from the FA," said Pochettino, who is usually one of the calmer managers prowling the touchline.
"I need to apologise to Mike Dean, I cannot behave in that way. It is not the way to behave and I am going to accept the charge.
"My behaviour was public and now I want to apologise in a public way. I need to apologise to him and all of the officials."
He would not reveal what Dean had said to him during their confrontation following the defeat.
That left third-placed Spurs on 60 points, five points behind Manchester City and six adrift of leaders Liverpool.

All three sides have played 27 games - Spurs are away at a crisis-ridden Chelsea on Wednesday, while City host West Ham and Liverpool are at home to an in-form Watford side.
"No, all that happened on the pitch stays on there," Pochettino said.
"I think that is the most important, we need to accept that we are with our emotion.
"For me it's not important, I don't take it personally.
"When your heart rate is so high you need to be careful how you take words. All that happened on the pitch, I'll never translate off it."

Football: Inter Milan return to third spot in Serie A with win over demoted Chievo

MILAN (REUTERS) - Inter Milan moved back into third place in the Italian Serie A standings when goals from Matteo Politano and Ivan Perisic gave them a 2-0 home win over relegated Chievo, who finished with 10 men, on Monday (May 13).
With two matches to play, Inter have 66 points, one ahead of Atalanta, with AC Milan and Roma a further three points back, in the race for a top-four finish and a Champions League place.
Politano broke the deadlock six minutes before half-time with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area which went in off the post.
The visitors, bottom of the table with only two wins all season, battled on bravely but were in more trouble when Nicola Rigoni was sent off for a second booking in the 76th minute.
Inter finally sealed the game when Perisic, who had earlier hit the post, turned in the rebound after a Cedric Soares shot struck the woodwork again.

Football: Uefa says anti-racism protocol not followed in Koulibaly abuse case during Napoli's game at San Siro

MILAN (AFP) - European football's governing body Uefa said on Friday (Dec 28) that the correct anti-racism protocol had not been followed during the Italian league game between Inter Milan and Napoli midweek amid repeated abuse of Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
Napoli's French-born player was targeted by monkey noises and racist chants at the San Siro, before being sent off for sarcastically applauding referee Paolo Mazzoleni.
Three announcements were made over the public address system imploring fans to stop the chants, but they continued.
According to Uefa's protocol, the match should have been suspended then but instead the game was allowed to continue.
In a joint statement Uefa and players' union FIFPro said they were "very concerned by this unacceptable racist incident and by what appears on the surface to be a failure to respect the widely-recognised three-step anti-racism protocol.
"Koulibaly was subject to racist chanting and, despite announcements made by the stadium speaker, the chants did not stop. Moreover, it seems that Napoli's coaching staff had already informed the referee several times of racist chants.
"Both organisations are of the opinion that the racist chants towards Koulibaly, who had to leave the pitch after receiving a second yellow card, are unacceptable and have no place in football.

"FIFPro and Uefa support the Italian football authorities on any additional measure that will be taken to tackle racism in stadia for which FIFPro and Uefa have a zero-tolerance policy."
Both organisations welcomed that Inter would have to play two Serie A home matches behind closed doors and another game with their North Stand closed.
Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti said after the game his players would walk off the pitch next time.
But Italian Football Federation chief Gabriele Gravina insisted that referee Mazzoleni officiated correctly in the game, which Inter won 1-0 thanks to a late goal when Napoli were down to nine men.
"Mazzoleni applied the rules perfectly," he told Sky Sports Italia after the game.
"If players left the field then it would break the rules, followed by a negative result for their team.
"Let's not forget that there are rules, which need to be improved. If not then it would be like the Wild West."

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions 'have to keep fighting' to avoid being wooden spoonists

SINGAPORE - The Young Lions are technically Singapore's Under-22 development team but, in reality, the Singapore Premier League (SPL) team are even younger in 2019.
As Fandi Ahmad's team take on Balestier Khalsa in their opening SPL fixture on Saturday (March 2) at the Jalan Besar Stadium, they will have an average age of just 20, with many of them rookies in professional football.
Also, the key players behind their 2018 season have left - Hami Syahin and Taufiq Muqminin both signed for Home United while brothers Irfan (Bangkok Glass, Thailand) and Ikhsan Fandi (Raufoss, Norway) have ventured overseas.
Looking pragmatically at his squad, Fandi feels that last season's creditable seventh-place finish in the nine-team table will be hard to repeat. He said: "Seriously, it will be a very difficult season. I will be very happy if we are not bottom. We just have to keep fighting."
But this is not a gripe from the 56-year-old former national captain. With nine players in the squad born in 2000 and after, he knows the team sorely lack experience.
"I have no complaints. They know the level is very high and I want them to learn fast. They are not used to this level of fitness, they are not used to training at this intensity. We will try to play good, positive football."
But one thing that defines this team is their spirit. As seen during training at Geylang Field on Monday, Fandi and assistant coach S. Subramani drilled the boys' pack mentality, instructing them to press high up the pitch in groups.

Even if this year's cohort is still raw, there are still bright sparks to look out. Attacking midfielder Saifullah Akbar is pacy and creative, Rezza Rezky Ramadhani is a central midfielder with an eye for a through pass while left-back Syahrul Sazali loves to overlap.
Captain Joshua Pereira, 21, said: "It's going to be a tough and long season.
"Apart from the SPL, we have the SEA Games and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) U-23 Championship qualifiers. It's going to get hectic but we are looking to do well and gain more experience.
"No doubt, it will be tough against all the seasoned SPL players.
"We are a very young team but our team spirit is strong, our fitness is good and we will never stop fighting for each other."
This year's pre-season results have been mixed. While Fandi's team easily brushed aside amateur National Football League sides such as Jungfrau Punggol and Katong, they lost to Malaysia Super League team Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia Premier League side PDRM, among other results.
"Preparation was not the best, it has been difficult to get the whole squad together," he said.
"Many of them have study and NS (national service) commitments, some were taken by other clubs, that's why I am calling up much younger players, who are 17 or 18."
The youngest is Marc Ryan Tan, 17, son of former Lions winger Steven Tan.
And in addition to the SPL, they will fly off to Japan for training and cold-weather acclimatisation next week, ahead of the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers in Ulaanbaatar from March 22 to 26. The team are drawn in Group G with Hong Kong, North Korea and hosts Mongolia.
In November and December, they will compete at the SEA Games in the Philippines.
And Fandi has called for patience as he begins the tough process of guiding his rookies in their new world of professional football.
He said: "The most important thing is development. After the first few games, the boys will understand the game more. It's a big challenge. Some of them are very raw but I am very happy with their commitment."
