Football: Arsenal's Ramsey signs four-year Juventus deal

MILAN (AFP) - Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a four-year deal to join Juventus on a free transfer, the Italian champions said on Monday (Feb 11).
The 28-year-old Wales international will arrive in northern Italy on July 1 with his contract running until June 30, 2023.
Juventus said that the club are liable to pay 3.7 million euros (S$5.7 million) by July 10 in the absence of a transfer fee.
Ramsey began his career at Cardiff City, making his his first team debut in 2007 before arriving at Arsenal in July 2008.
Over the past decade he has played 256 Premier League games, scoring 38 top-flight goals, and winning three FA Cup and two Community Shield.
He also had two loan spells at Nottingham Forest in 2010, and back at former club, Cardiff in 2011.
"As well as being recognised as a solid Premier League player, Ramsey brings a wealth of European experience," Juventus said.
Ramsey has 58 caps for Wales, scoring 14 goals, and was a part of the Welsh side that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
He becomes the third Welshman to play for Juventus following club legend John Charles and former European Golden Boot winner Ian Rush.

Football: Lukaku double inspires Man United to 3-1 win at Palace

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku rediscovered his finishing touch in fine fashion, scoring a superb goal in each half to help them to a 3-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace on Wednesday (Feb 27).
The victory stretched United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's unbeaten league run to 11 games and boosted the Norwegian's hopes of landing the job on a permanent basis after taking over from Jose Mourinho in December.
It left United fifth on 55 points from 28 games, one behind fourth-placed Arsenal and two ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand, as the three-way race for a berth in next season's Champions League intensified.
Lukaku fired United into a 33rd minute lead with a deft finish from the edge of the penalty area after a dazzling solo run by left back Luke Shaw, who beat three Palace defenders.
The Belgium striker made it 2-0 in the 52nd with a well-taken volley from a tight angle after Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof nodded an Ashley Young corner into his path.
Right back Joel Ward pulled one back for Palace midway through the second half with a diving header before Young drilled in an unstoppable low shot in the closing stages to seal United's victory.

Football: Man City end Newport's FA Cup dream to reach quarter-finals

Football: Man City end Newport's FA Cup dream to reach quarter-finals

NEWPORT, Wales (REUTERS) - Manchester City endured some anxious moments but escaped from fourth-tier Newport County with their FA Cup hopes intact as Phil Foden scored twice in an ultimately comfortable 4-1 fifth-round victory on Saturday (Feb 16).
Newport, 82 rungs below City on the English football ladder, rattled Pep Guardiola's aristocrats in the first half and Tyreeq Bakinson almost gave them the lead at a rocking Rodney Parade.
But City's class showed in the second half and once Leroy Sane's powerful shot from a tight angle put them in front after 51 minutes the chances of a seismic Cup shock faded away.
Foden's 75th-minute shot crept in at the near post to subdue the home fans but when Padraig Amond maintained his run of scoring in every round with an 88th minute lob it seemed possible Newport's fairytale might have a late twist.
But a second goal for youngster Foden arrived 71 seconds later before Riyad Mahrez rubbed salt into Newport's wounds with virtually the last kick of the game as City claimed a 12th win in 13 matches in all competitions.
"It was a really tough game and it was lucky that Phil got the third goal," Guardiola, whose side are still chasing silverware on four fronts, said.
"Newport used their strengths and we are not used to playing against that every week. That's why the Cup is so special."
In the day's other ties Brighton and Hove Albion shrugged off their poor Premier League form to beat Frank Lampard's Derby County 2-1 thanks to first-half goals by Anthony Knockaert and Juergen Locadia.
Former Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole grabbed Derby's consolation - his first FA Cup goal.
Millwall booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over an AFC Wimbledon side who had outclassed top-flight West Ham United in the previous round.
Three more ties take place on Sunday, with top-flight Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace both in action, while on Monday Chelsea host Manchester United in a repeat of last season's FA Cup final won by Chelsea.
THROW-IN BARRAGE
Newport's historic Rodney Parade stadium was packed to the rafters long before kick off as the home fans gathered in hope of witnessing what manager Michael Flynn claimed would be the greatest FA Cup shock of all time.
At times during the first half Guardiola's City slickers, who put six goals past Chelsea last week, appeared decidedly uncomfortable under a barrage of long throw-ins.
From one such delivery Newport seemed certain to take the lead when the ball bounced up invitingly for Bakinson who had all the goal to aim for with a close-range header, but City keeper Ederson appeared from nowhere to make a stunning save.
City dominated possession with Sane grazing the bar and Mahrez going close but Newport were always a threat and Joss Labadie skewed a half chance wide from another long throw.
Six minutes after the break City went ahead when Sane's fierce shot smashed Joe Day straight in the face on its way into the net - the keeper getting a bloody nose for his trouble.
Day, who sprinted off the pitch to attend the birth of his twins following Newport's fourth-round win over second-tier Middlesbrough, was at fault as Foden made it 2-0.
The 30-year-old Amond took advantage of a lapse to dink Newport's reply, briefly restoring the decibel-level in the stadium, but Foden's sweet left-foot strike and Mahrez's cool finish spared City any late anxiety.
"I am very proud to have scored in every round but disappointed we didn't get the grand slam finish we were hoping for," Irish striker Amond said.

Reds urged to 'enjoy ride'

Reds urged to 'enjoy ride'

LONDON • Liverpool are inching towards a first league title in 29 years, but Jurgen Klopp has called on his team to bask in the journey with their supporters and not be consumed by the "Holy Grail" of lifting the Premier League crown.
The Reds' 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Cardiff on Sunday restored their two-point lead over champions Manchester City (86 points), who will play their game in hand against cross-town rivals Manchester United tomorrow.
While Pep Guardiola's men will return to the top of the table should they win at Old Trafford, it has still been a season to cherish for Klopp and his players, with just three league matches left.
He said: "If you are only motivated to win the (league title), then something is wrong with you. We want to win football games because we enjoy the ride with the fans.
"In the end, we will see how many points we have and then we get what we get."
Georginio Wijnaldum's second-half opener - a cleverly worked corner routine which resulted in Trent Alexander-Arnold's cutback - and James Milner's late penalty secured a ninth consecutive win in all competitions for Klopp's men, a result he called "really massive".
The German said: "We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent. It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more."

BONE HARD
Dry pitches are dangerous for the players injury-wise... the ball doesn't roll that quick and it's difficult for the fluency of the game.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, is not happy with the pitch at Cardiff.

He also revealed that Wijnaldum's strike was from "not from the training ground, but from the dressing room at half-time when the boys decided to do that".
He said: "We put a lot of emphasis on set pieces. We know Cardiff are outstandingly strong on offensive set pieces but, from time to time, they have problems with defensive set pieces. Some of the boys obviously found that out.
"A brilliant goal, I loved it."
He blasted the playing surface, which was not watered despite the baking temperatures and was "bone hard".
He said: "The ball didn't roll like normal. Everybody saw it. Dry pitches are dangerous for the players injury-wise and you know why people leave the pitch dry.
"The ball doesn't roll that quick and it's difficult for the fluency of the game."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock denied he had ordered his groundsmen not to water the pitch and did some finger pointing of his own - at Mohamed Salah, who won Milner's spot kick. He accused the forward of going down too easily and that he could not have "got much higher off the diving board".
Klopp insisted it was a penalty because Cardiff captain Sean Morrison "used the hand four or five times".
He started the mind games ahead of City's tricky trip to United, who were routed 4-0 at Everton on Sunday, saying he is not counting his chickens yet.
"Even if United get a point or something, we still have to play games after that. We just have to stay focused on our things," said Klopp, whose team host Huddersfield on Friday.
"Some people up in Liverpool might ask us if we're thinking about Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals (on May 1).
"We'll be completely focused on Huddersfield."

Football: Everton set target of winning EPL title within next decade

LONDON (AFP) - Everton chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale has set the Toffees a target of winning the Premier League and playing Champions League football in their new stadium during the next decade.
The Liverpool club have never lifted the Premier League trophy - they were last crowned champions of England in 1986/87 when they took the then First Division title to their current Goodison Park base.
Champions League football is also a rarity for Everton fans, with the club presently 11th in the Premier League table and 17 points adrift of a top-four spot that would secure a place among Europe's elite.
But Barrett-Baxendale, who on just the second day of her now eight-month tenure sacked manager Sam Allardyce and director of football Steve Walsh - believes Everton must aim high should they complete a proposed move to their new £500 million (S$865.9 million) stadium at Bramley-Moore.
Barrett-Baxendale, speaking at her first Everton shareholders meeting at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall on Tuesday (Jan 8), said the club should be "challenging at the top of the Premier League and competing at the highest level in European competitions".
She added: "Ultimately this means challenging for domestic titles and trophies, not only to win cups, but to win Premier League titles too.
"It means competing regularly in the Champions League and it means doing all of this in a world-class, world-renowned football stadium."
Barrett-Baxendale, one of the most high-profile women in the traditionally male-dominated world of English football, admitted: "This is an extremely challenging goal. It is very much a long-term goal for our club but it is vital we are ambitious and that we deliver performances on and off the pitch that drives our club forward to achieve our ambitions.
"I acknowledge our vision is challenging, and the barriers to entry are indeed daunting, but we are Everton and we must all be focused and driven to meet that challenge."

Reds 100% in race: Klopp

Reds 100% in race: Klopp

LONDON • Another Sunday away game against a local rival, another goal-less draw, and another point that may either play a part in Liverpool winning the Premier League or costing them the title.
A stalemate in the 233rd Merseyside derby at Everton left the Reds one point behind champions Manchester City (71) with nine games to go - meaning that, for the first time since December, the title race is no longer in their hands.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists there is no need to panic despite his team dropping points for the fourth time in six league games.
"The only way you can win something is to stay calm but lively, critical but confident and, in the end, believe in your chance," he said. "I believe 100 per cent in our chance.
"I'm completely fine with chasing. Who wants to be top of the table at the beginning of March?
"It is nice, but there are lots of games to play.
"I watched Match of the Day last night and saw the celebrations of Man City. They had 900 chances and scored one goal, a shot with the wrong foot. You have to be ready for these chances.
"We do not think about City when they are a point behind us, now we are behind them but not too far. They have to win, we have to win and let's see who wins more at the end."
Liverpool had just three shots on target out of 10 attempts, the best two falling to forward Mohamed Salah who was denied first by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and then a perfectly timed interception by Michael Keane.
There is the underlying thought that something has gone wrong with the forward line, that just when Liverpool could have done with a spark of magic to snatch a win from a hard-fought game, the fire has dimmed.
It was generally accepted that Salah could not repeat his scoring feat of last season.
But, after a few weeks when he did touch those heights again, he has scored just once in his last seven games and looked distinctly tentative on Sunday.
"When you see the situation, he is doing everything right," Klopp said of the Egyptian's wasted chances. "He takes his decision a millisecond earlier or later and the defender can jump in.
"We had our moments, but there is no reason for taking it or not taking it, you have to fight against the circumstances, against the opponent, and the boys did that."
He also bristled at the suggestion that he failed to go for the jugular by not bringing on another attacker.

NOT A GAME OF PLAYSTATION
Do you think we didn't take enough risks today? That's a really disappointing question - do you think it's PlayStation?
Bring an extra attacker, and everything changes?

JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, dismissing a question on his choice of substitutions against Everton.

In the second half, the German sent on two attack-minded players, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana, plus a midfielder in James Milner. Asked if he should have been more adventurous by bringing on three attackers, he made clear his unhappiness with the query.
"Do you think we didn't take enough risks today? That's a really disappointing question - do you think it's PlayStation?" he said.
"Bring an extra attacker, and everything changes? Football is not like that. We don't lose our nerve."
Klopp, who laughed off an exchange with an Everton ballboy who appeared to mock him with applause towards the end of the game, also pointed to the weather as having an impact on the contest.
"The wind was coming from all directions and did not help anybody," the 51-year-old said. "We didn't score, that happens. It was a difficult game. It was just a fight and we were ready for that fight.
"Now we have a point more than before. All good."
