Reds the hungrier side, says Van Dijk

Reds the hungrier side, says Van Dijk

LONDON • Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool will want victory more than Everton in the Merseyside derby today owing to the ramifications in the pursuit of the Premier League title.
Everton have not beaten Liverpool since October 2010 and a winless sequence of 16 league derbies is the longest barren spell in the club's history. The manner of Liverpool's victory in the 96th minute of December's derby also smarts for Marco Silva's side, whose form plummeted afterwards.
However, none of those factors compare with the prize of landing Liverpool's first league championship since 1990, according to van Dijk, who insists the greater motivation at Goodison Park today will be among the players in red.
The Liverpool defender said: "I've played in the Old Firm (Celtic v Rangers) derby, which is really intense. But this is the Premier League and it's totally different.
"It will be a game that can go either way and sometimes in these type of games it is who wants it the most.
"We are in a position where we definitely want it the most and hopefully we can show it on the pitch."
The Dutchman expects "a game full of passion" and says he will thrive on the knowledge that Everton, like Manchester United last weekend, are desperate to damage their rivals' title challenge.
"I like that," he said. "It is always something which motivates you even more and it is a great game to play in. It's the derby and it's special but we want to show our quality, win the game - hopefully with good football but if not, we are going to fight for it."
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is friends with a few Evertonians who want Liverpool to win the league rather than Manchester City. He refused to divulge names for safety reasons; such is the nature of the fierce rivalry of the two clubs.
"I am not allowed to speak about it," the German, who has won five and drawn two of his seven Merseyside derbies, said jokingly.
"I promised I would not say their names because that could cause them problems. Because they know me they think it is better for us (to win the league) than somebody else they don't know."
Klopp believes Liverpool's dominance of the derby in recent years should inspire, rather than intimidate Everton today, when Goodison hosts its 100th league meeting between the clubs.
He said: "That (nine years unbeaten) is much easier to work on for the other side. It is much easier to motivate them and say: 'Come on boys, it's time. It's our moment'. It's much easier for them.
"We respect them a lot as a team. That is how we have to see it. That is how we have to deal with it, not thinking we have had a couple of good results.
"We have had difficult games against Everton but really good results and we have to think about what we did attitude-wise in these games so we were always ready. We have to be that again.
"It is really important we don't take anything - not just in this game but in all games - for granted. Just work for it and the world is open."

SEVILLE • While other teams "have decisive players, we have the best in the world".
Lionel Messi left the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan pitch with the praise of Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde ringing in his ears after notching his 50th career hat-trick to give the Catalan giants a commanding lead at the top of LaLiga.
The Argentina forward was the inspiration behind their 4-2 comeback win at Sevilla on Saturday after the Spanish champions had twice fallen behind to strikes from Jesus Navas and Gabriel Mercado.
Messi, who has struggled for form in recent weeks owing to a niggling injury, made a mockery of Sevilla's fine home record this term - they had beaten Real Madrid 3-0 in the league and Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg of their King's Cup quarter-final tie last month.
"He is decisive and superlative," said Valverde, whose side added a fourth in stoppage time through Luis Suarez. "It's not just his goals... he always delivers in the right place at the right time."

Pablo Machin's men are among Messi's favourite opponents - last year, he came off the bench to score twice in two minutes and rescue a 2-2 draw from 2-0 down.
The 31-year-old went one better this time and has now scored 36 times in 37 games against the Andalusian outfit, but the Barcelona talisman claimed that it "was always tough to win here".
He told reporters: "We know what it is like to come to this stadium and how good Sevilla's players are, they made things very hard for us by taking the lead, but we knew how to overcome all that."
Sevilla coach Machin admitted to sports website tribuna.com that his side simply had no answer to "the best player in the world, who has got our number and seems to have taken a special liking to us".
Barcelona led LaLiga by 10 points ahead of last night's matches.
It was Messi's 44th hat-trick for the club, with 32 coming in LaLiga, eight in the Champions League, three in the King's Cup and one in the Spanish Super Cup, while he has also nabbed six trebles for his country.

Football: Top four chasing Chelsea cannot afford to lose at Man United, says Sarri

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea cannot afford to lose at Manchester United on Sunday in what will be a 'difficult match' for both teams looking to finish in the Premier League's top four, the London club's manager Maurizio Sarri said on Friday (April 26).
Chelsea are fourth in the standings, three points behind Tottenham Hotspur, a point above Arsenal and three above United. If Chelsea finish outside the top four, they will have to win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League.
"We have two very important targets at the end of our season," Sarri told reporters.
"The first is the top four and the second is to get to the final of the Europa League.
"For the first target, this match is more than important for us and for our opponents. So we will try to win, of course, but we need not to lose. It's a very difficult match for both I think."
However, Chelsea are yet to win a single point away at a "top six" club this season. They have lost four games, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one, and face a United side hurting from a 2-0 midweek humbling at the hands of Manchester City.
"In the second half of the season we face the big teams away, only Tottenham at home," Sarri added. "It's not easy. We have to play against opponents with a very high level of motivation after the Manchester derby. But we have to try."
Sarri also said Chelsea forward Eden Hazard deserved to be named in the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Team of the Year that was dominated by players from title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool.
No player has been involved in more goals than Hazard in the league this season (16 goals and 13 assists) and Sarri was of the opinion that Chelsea's position in the table was the reason behind the snub.
"I think that Eden deserved to be in the top of 11 of the Premier League," Sarri said. "But I think also at the moment the table is clear. There is City, there is Liverpool, and then the other teams. So I think the vote was influenced by the table."
The Italian boss confirmed Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi would be sidelined for three months with a ruptured Achilles he sustained in the 2-2 draw with Burnley. Defender Antonio Rudiger could return while midfielder N'Golo Kante remains a doubt.
"Rudiger is OK at the moment. We are trying to recover Kante but I am not sure at the moment," Sarri said.

Destiny beckons for Reds

Destiny beckons for Reds

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has issued the magic number of "90-something" points if Liverpool are to lift the Premier League title this season and end 29 years of hurt.
He set the target after the Reds' late rally at Southampton to secure a 3-1 victory on Friday, re-establishing a two-point advantage at the top of the table over defending champions Manchester City.
It was far from easy for Klopp's men, who were rarely at their best at St Mary's after being confronted by awkward opponents, but it is nights like these that will only pep belief the long wait is almost over.
In this tussle at the top, they will not be the first to blink after Mohamed Salah's first goal since mid-February and Jordan Henderson in the last 10 minutes sealed the win.
Shane Long had grabbed the opener, only for Naby Keita to equalise with his maiden strike since joining Liverpool.
Purring after a "brilliant" comeback, Klopp, who joined in the celebrations after the final whistle, said: "We have 82 points, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us (to slip up). I am really proud. It is incredible.
"It is a difficult year for everybody, you'll need to have 70 to 75 points to qualify for the Champions League. But we are still in the race and that is nice.

    16

Matches unbeaten at their Anfield home this season (W14 D 2).

"They deserved their early goal but we adjusted to the situation, stayed calm and waited for our moment. We had to be more lively in the second half, when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum were struggling with the intensity of the season.
"But James Milner and Henderson came on, brought aggressiveness - verbal aggressiveness - and we had direction again after that."
The two substitutions were highlighted by pundit and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, who told Sky Sports they were "massive" and "a great decision" at a point when their "passing at times in the game was a bit too slow".
While the Liverpool boss admitted the performance was "not at the top level", Klopp praised his side for showing grit, insisting that "at this stage, it is about fighting".

Declaring his team "will play our own football" as they enter the home stretch with five games remaining, the German said: "People want us to play like Manchester City but we are unable to do that.
"I told the boys we have a good mentality among us. We were well-organised, we pressed high and were everywhere on the pitch."
He also hailed Salah, who had been questioned before the match, claiming his class was "never in doubt", adding: "It was goal number 50 I heard for Liverpool, that's an incredible number.
"As a striker, you have chances and each striker is a human being. Maybe you have better moments and less good moments.
"But he's pretty consistent, his physical things are always there. He always stayed calm to deal with the situation."
And defender Virgil van Dijk, who was again a rock on his return to his former club, fired a warning to the rest of the teams that have yet to play Liverpool this term, starting with Chelsea next Sunday, that "with the players we have, with the way we play, we are always going to be dangerous with".

NO LETTING OFF
We've got to win every game. This was very big. Every game is massive. It was a big performance in the second half and a big result.
JORDAN HENDERSON , Liverpool captain, calling on his men to seize their chance of ending their league title drought.

KUDOS, GUYS
We have 82 points, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us (to slip up). I am really proud. It is incredible.
JURGEN KLOPP , Liverpool manager, purring after his side's brilliant comeback.

He added: "I do enjoy it (the pressure), obviously, I do not like conceding, but we showed character. The most important thing is to just keep on doing what we've been doing all season."
Henderson agreed with his teammate's assertion that their battling qualities were for all to see, before calling on the squad to make a final push and give the red half of Merseyside the present they have long desired.
It has been an unrelenting campaign with plenty of drama - the title lead has changed hands 25 times this season, the joint second most in a campaign since 1945.
But, with the finish line in sight, Henderson stressed this was a golden chance for his team.
The skipper, who scored his first goal of the campaign, said: "We've got to win every game. It was a big performance in the second half and a big result.
"I haven't got in those positions often this season because I've been in a deeper role. The manager felt I could get in the final-third positions more. No matter what happens in the game, we still fight right until the very end.
"That is what we have been doing for a long time now, and we need to keep that mentality going and not stopping until that final whistle goes."

Football: Juventus put one hand on Serie A title after weathering fightback to squeeze past Napoli

ROME (AFP) - Juventus closed all talk of a challenge to their Italian Serie A dominance after coming through a second-half onslaught at Napoli to win 2-1, in an engrossing match that saw each side have a man sent off and stretch their lead at the top to a huge 16 points.
Massimiliano Allegri's unbeaten leaders have now as good as sealed their eighth straight title after the match on Sunday (March 3) that looked dead at half-time with Juve two goals and a man up. But it sparked back into life when goalscorer Miralem Pjanic was sent off for handling a Napoli pass and picking up a second yellow card just after the break.
"I fell asleep, I should have replaced Pjanic when he had the first card. He was at risk, but I didn't expect him to handle," said Allegri, whose future at Juve is uncertain after what will be five seasons in Turin. "I already said we'll sit down to talk about this season and the next. I am very happy to be at Juventus."
Midfielder Pjanic swept home his free-kick opener in the 28th minute, which came immediately after Napoli were reduced to 10 men. Goalkeeper Alex Meret had sliced down Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese nipped in to intercept a terrible Kevin Malcuit back pass.
Emre Can added the second from a corner 11 minutes later after substitute David Ospina tipped away Pjanic's stinging shot, but the Bosnian's red card gave Napoli a glimmer of hope.
They were back in the game in the 61st minute when Jose Callejon tapped home a pinpoint Lorenzo Insigne cross, and then piled the pressure on a suddenly creaking Juve, with Piotr Zielinski twice forcing fine saves from Polish countryman Wojciech Szczesny.
It looked as though the hosts were set to launch a final assault when they were given a penalty six minutes before the end for a controversial handball decision against Alex Sandro given by the Video Assistant Referee, only for Insigne to crash his spot kick against the post and let the champions off the hook.

Italy remembers Astori

As elsewhere across the Serie A weekend, play at the Stadio San Paolo stopped in the 13th minute to honour the memory of deceased former Italy international Davide Astori, with fans of both sides applauding the ex-Fiorentina captain, who died in his sleep aged just 31 on March 4 last year.
Astori's name was chanted by fans of AC Milan, where he came through as a youth player, during a 1-0 win over Sassuolo on Saturday that took Gennaro Gattuso's side third and a point above Inter Milan, who lost 2-1 at Cagliari amid a public contract dispute with absent star striker Mauro Icardi.
But the most emotional scenes came during Fiorentina's 3-1 defeat at Atalanta, who kept their hopes of Champions League football alive thanks to goals from Josip Ilicic, Alejandro Gomez and Robin Gosens.
Atalanta playmaker Ilicic, who played alongside Astori at Fiorentina, broke down in tears when played stopped, while away fans held up "Astori" signs and the home fans showed appreciation for a player born and raised in the province of Bergamo, where the hosts are based.
"This situation has taken over a huge part of us this week. Tomorrow we will close to his family as we have been for the last year," said Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli.
Gian Piero Gasperini's flamboyant Atalanta are six points behind fourth-placed Inter after winning the second spectacular clash with Fiorentina in a matter of days after their thrilling 3-3 Coppa Italia semi-final draw midweek.
They are level on 41 points with Lazio, 3-0 winners over Roma in Saturday's Rome derby, and Torino, who beat rock-bottom Chievo by the same score on Sunday.
Two points further back are Sampdoria, thanks to 36-year-old Fabio Quagliarella joining Ronaldo at the top of the scoring charts with 19 goals following a brace in his side's 2-1 win at struggling Spal.
"I don't feel like anyone special," said modest Quagliarella after the match. "I'm not the star man, I'm part of a team that works towards a single objective, everyone is useful and no one is indispensable."

It leaves the injury-hit Aussies with much to ponder ahead of Friday's game against Palestine, when they will need a win to get their title defence on track.
Australia started confidently but their Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan made the first save when he kept out Yousef Rawashdeh at his near post after a mistake by Massimo Luongo.
Shortly afterwards, Australia's former South Sudanese refugee Awer Mabil, in his first competitive international, nearly opened the scoring but his close-range shot was blocked by Amir Shafi.
The youthful Socceroos had more than 70 per cent of first-half possession but rarely threatened, while Jordan were intent on harassing in midfield and seeking chances on the break.
Their goal came from a corner on 26 minutes, when defender Bani-Yaseen escaped Luongo's marking and powered his header into the top corner, prompting jubilation in the strongly pro-Jordan crowd of just under 5,000.
Suddenly Australia were rocking and three minutes later, they were grateful for Ryan's finger-tip save as he pushed Baha Abdelrahman's free kick onto the bar.
In the second half, Arnold brought on Rhyan Grant and then Chris Ikonomidis to find a way through Jordan's defence.
Celtic forward Tom Rogic's stinging shot was kept out by Shafi, before Ikonomidis's attempt at a follow-up was smothered by the defence.
Rogic passed up a golden opportunity for the equaliser on 72 minutes, when he was free in the box but scooped his shot well over from Aziz Behich's cross.
Six minutes later, the lively Mabil smashed one off the upright with Shafi beaten, before Ikonomidis's header was scrambled off the line.
With three minutes to go, Jamie Maclaren had a goal chalked off for offside and. with the last action of the game, Shafi pulled off a superb double save to deny Ikonomidis and Jackson Irvine, capping a desperately disappointing day for the Aussies and a joyful one for the Jordanians.

BARCELONA • Barcelona star Lionel Messi was showered with praise by both his coach Ernesto Valverde and losing manager Bruno Genesio, after a headline performance in his side's 5-1 second-leg win over Lyon to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
The forward opened the scoring at the Nou Camp on Wednesday with an audacious penalty and restored control in the tie after Lyon had pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, hitting a decisive third goal after a trademark dazzling run to shake off four defenders.
The Argentinian, who at the start of the season promised to "do everything to bring that beautiful trophy back to the Nou Camp", tore through Lyon's backline twice more to tee up further goals for Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele.
"We are all psyched up for the Champions League and so is Leo. He produced an outstanding performance tonight, he was incredible," Valverde told reporters.
Lyon coach Genesio added: "Tonight Messi was in Champions League mode. He's a genius and can do things that nobody else can. Sometimes he is just unstoppable."
A 0-0 draw in France in the first leg last month meant Lyon always had a chance to make Barca nervous, but Messi's sumptuously chipped penalty and a simple finish from Philippe Coutinho looked to have finished the visitors off before half-time.
Yet Lucas Tousart's volley left Lyon one goal away from putting Barcelona out, only for Messi to take charge again with the third goal and his two assists.
"We went out to take the game to them from the very start, we moved the ball quickly and we were at our very best," Messi said.
He had seen his record of eight hat-tricks in the Champions League equalled by Cristiano Ronaldo a day earlier in Juventus' 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

  • Consecutive years Barcelona have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, a record.

Messi has not hoisted the Champions League trophy since 2015, while Ronaldo has won it four times in the last five seasons with Real and has staked his claim to win it again with Juventus.
On the scoring charts, Messi now has 108 goals in Europe's elite club competition, behind Ronaldo's imperious 124.
"What Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus did was unbelievable. I thought Atletico would be stronger, but Juve walked all over them and Cristiano had a magical night," he added. "But every team left is difficult, so let's see who we get next."

Football: Man United draw Barcelona in quarter-finals of Champions League

PARIS (AFP) - Manchester United will face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals while Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur clash in an all-Premier League tie following Friday's (March 15) draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
Liverpool were drawn to play Porto in the knockout rounds for the second year in succession as Ajax's reward for eliminating the holders Real Madrid is a two-legged tie against Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo.
English hopes are high that this could be their year in Europe's elite club competition after all four of their representatives made it through to the last eight.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United will have their work cut out if they are to go any further as they take Lionel Messi's Barcelona in the headline tie.
For Solskjaer, the second leg will bring back memories of the 1999 final, when the Norwegian came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner for United against Bayern Munich at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium.
With City and United not allowed to play their home leg in the same week, United will entertain the leaders of LaLiga at Old Trafford on April 9 or 10, with the return a week later.
The last time the Premier League had four teams in the quarter-finals, in 2008/09, Barcelona beat the Old Trafford side 2-0 in the final in Rome.
The clubs clashed again in the final at Wembley in 2011, with Barca winning 3-1 on that occasion.
Uefa also drew the semi-finals on Friday, meaning the winners of the Barcelona v United will face either Liverpool or Porto in the last four.
Jurgen Klopp's side, fresh from knocking out Bayern Munich in the last 16, will be confident of beating the Portuguese champions after defeating them 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16 on their way to the final last season.
Liverpool will host two-time European Cup winners Porto at Anfield in the first leg before heading to the Estadio do Dragao in the return on April 16 or 17.
There is guaranteed to be one English team in the semi-finals after Tottenham and City were paired together, with the first leg to be played in London.
With Pep Guardiola's team top of the Premier League, 13 points ahead of Spurs in third, City will be the favourites to advance to their first semi-final since 2016. City have also won their last three meetings with Mauricio Pochettino's team.
The draw means there will be three clashes between the sides in 10 days - they are also due to meet in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on April 20.
The winners of that tie will host either Ajax or Juventus in the first leg of the semi-finals.
The latter tie is a repeat of the 1996 final, which the Italian club won on penalties against an Ajax team who had won the trophy the previous year.
Juventus have lost five finals since then but are hoping Ronaldo can fire them to glory this season after his hat-trick knocked out Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
That result ended Atletico's dreams of reaching the final, which will be played at their Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday, June 1.
Quarter-final draw:
Ajax Amsterdam v Juventus
Liverpool v Porto
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City
Barcelona v Manchester United
Semi-finals: Tottenham/Man City v Ajax/Juventus
Man United/Barcelona v Liverpool/Porto
First leg April 30/May 1, second leg May 7-8 .
Final: June 1 (Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid)
