Football: Mario Balotelli posts goal celebration video on social media mid-match

PARIS (AFP) - Mario Balotelli showed off a new goal celebration on Sunday (March 3) as he took a selfie video with his Marseille teammates and posted it on social media during their 2-0 win over Saint-Etienne.
The Italian scored his fourth goal in six Ligue 1 games since joining Marseille from Nice in January by hooking home Florian Thauvin's 12th-minute corner with an excellent acrobatic volley.
"Balotelli takes the pressure, he takes the limelight. He reminds me of (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic and he scored an Ibrahimovic goal," said Saint-Etienne coach Jean-Louis Gasset.
"He has brought back the public, the confidence, and many of his teammates will raise their level of play."
As he celebrated his volley, Balotelli took a phone from the cameraman behind the goal before filming the video with his laughing teammates and posting it on his Instagram story.
The 28-year-old then carried on playing.
He was not the first player to produce a selfie-based celebration, after Roma great Francesco Totti took a picture of himself after scoring against Lazio in the capital-city derby in 2015.
Marseille doubled their advantage nine minutes later through a Thauvin penalty and closed out the win with ease.
Rudi Garcia's men have now taken 13 points from their last five league matches to leapfrog Saint-Etienne into fourth, just five points adrift of Lyon in the race for the third and final Champions League spot.

'Never satisfied' Pep urges focus for FA Cup final

LONDON • More than £500 million (S$889.5 million) have been lavished on Manchester City, the most expensive squad assembled in Premier League history.
But it requires so much more than money to build a team of this extraordinary calibre, starting with a rare vision built on mastery of ball possession and the obsessiveness to bring it to life week after week.
Manchester United have shown that you can pour millions down the drain, or into Alexis Sanchez's bank account, and get nowhere without a strategy.
Only "special, special managers" can retain the league title - so many great coaches have failed to achieve it, including former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
But, after City became the first side to retain the league crown since Alex Ferguson did so with United a decade ago, Pep Guardiola challenged his players to keep quenching his thirst for silverware.
His team matched their record total of 32 wins from last season and accrued a total of 98 points, the second highest in league history behind the 100-point tally they achieved last year.
Guardiola is more concerned with trophies than records, however, urging his players to retain their focus for Saturday's FA Cup final against Watford. The Spaniard is fully aware that City, who won the League Cup in February, are on the verge of an unprecedented domestic treble.

WINNING MENTALITY
The big competitors are never satisfied. The feeling is never enough. In tennis, basketball and golf, they want more and more.
PEP GUARDIOLA, on his ambitions for Manchester City.

He said: "We're so tired but, at the same time, winning is so addictive and, in a few days, we have the FA Cup final. It will be, for most of us, the first time in our lives we have been in an FA Cup final.
"No team in England has done (the domestic treble) before and we have the chance to it. We have to be focused in this game. The FA Cup is not an easy title to achieve."
While the City boss, who has now lifted four major trophies since joining in 2016, is expecting to face a challenge from more than one rival next term, he has plans to recruit new players in a bid to win the league title three straight times - a feat only achieved by Ferguson.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri is reportedly at the top of his wish list, while Leicester defender Ben Chilwell is also of interest.
The 48-year-old said: "The big competitors are never satisfied. The feeling is never enough. In tennis, basketball and golf, they want more and more, and that is why winning back-to-back showed me this kind of thing that it was not enough, what they have done.
"We have to make the right decisions for next season to come back stronger, because Liverpool will maintain it and the other ones will be better.
"United must come back, Chelsea one more year with (Maurizio) Sarri will be better, Tottenham, we have seen in the Champions League and, when Arsenal do what they have to do, they will be there, too. We accept the challenge and I promise you we will be stronger."
However, whether Vincent Kompany - whose contract is up in the summer - stays is still up in the air.
The City captain, though, revealed Guardiola "starts everything off" and his "desire" from day one had transmitted to the rest of the players, giving them the confidence they "could win back-to-back titles straight away".

ZAGREB • Like Germany's Joachim Low, Zlatko Dalic has also opted to rebuild his squad following last year's World Cup and the Croatia coach was delighted with his new-look team on Thursday.
With only four starters from last year's World Cup final, Croatia started the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback win against Azerbaijan in their Group E match at the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb.
Runners-up in Russia, Croatia fell behind early to a 19th-minute Ramil Sheydaev goal. Borna Barisic made it 1-1 just before half-time and substitute Andrej Kramaric hit the winner 11 minutes from time.
"We will have to switch from counter-punchers to the team that will dominate the possession and attack," Dalic said, describing his side's intended new style of play.
"I want the young, potential players to bring us another dimension."
Team captain Luka Modric, Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic and Besiktas central defender Domagoj Vida were the only players retained from the starting XI against France in the World Cup final at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow nine months ago.

We will have to switch from counter-punchers to the team that will dominate the possession and attack. I want the young, potential players to bring us another dimension.
ZLATKO DALIC, Croatia coach, on their new strategy.

Two starters from Moscow, forward Mario Mandzukic and goalkeeper Danijel Subasic, have retired from international football.
Liverpool central defender Dejan Lovren was suspended for this match, while Inter right-back Sime Vrsaljko and AC Milan left-back Ivan Strinic were injured.
Dalic opted to leave Eintracht Frankfurt forward Ante Rebic and Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic on the bench, but stayed true to his words ahead of the clash by naming newcomers - Wolfsburg winger Josip Brekalo and Dinamo Zagreb forward Bruno Petkovic - in his attack-oriented starting line-up.
"I am satisfied. The win and three points are the most important," the 52-year-old added.
"It was difficult - more than we expected - but, when you concede such a goal, it is difficult to break their wall. We were patient, persistent and deserved this win."
Besides Azerbaijan, Croatia are in the same group as Hungary, Slovakia and Wales. Dalic's men travel to Budapest to face Hungary tomorrow.

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

BARCELONA • After their remote hopes of another improbable Champions League revival were stopped dead by Lionel Messi and a rampant Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side have to undergo a huge overhaul to return to Europe's elite.
United tried in vain to summon up the spirit of 1999 at the same Nou Camp where they stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 comeback win in the Champions League final.
While they started the second leg of their quarter-final brightly, with Marcus Rashford hitting the bar, a pair of mistakes gave Messi the chance to put the Red Devils away.
Ashley Young, playing as left-back in place of the suspended Luke Shaw, gave the ball away for the first while David de Gea, United's player of the year four times in the past five years, let a tame effort slip under his hands.
Just like that, their hosts were out of sight 3-0 on Tuesday and 4-0 on aggregate, the first time United have lost by four or more goals in a two-legged European knockout tie.
Solskjaer said he knew all along "there is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at".
The Norwegian added: "We were fighting against a great team... but I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight.

START FROM SCRATCH
There is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on the scale of the job at hand.

"We've good players to work with and, at the moment, we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four (in the Premier League). But we've got a rebuilding job. It starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions (in the summer).
"We're on with the job and have spoken to the players we need to get the best out of each other, create an environment of top-class attitude, world-class attitude every single day."
While he has restored United's confidence, which hit rock-bottom under Jose Mourinho, and has overseen an improvement in results in the four months since taking the job in December, the scale of the long-term surgery his side need was laid bare in Spain.
Barcelona, led by a brace from Messi and a fine curling strike from Philippe Coutinho, were dominant, with Solskjaer conceding he "could see the difference between the two teams".
His reasoning cut little ice with former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, though, who felt that United's lack of character was apparent, with "no one performing to a standard anywhere near good enough to take on Barcelona".
But, while the pundit also reserved criticism for Paul Pogba for "playing his own kind of game", former United star Paul Scholes feels the France midfielder remains a player Solskjaer should retain and build his side around.
Meanwhile, United said yesterday they are investigating racist abuse directed at defender Young on social media after the loss to Barcelona.
The England international was targeted on Twitter after the 33-year-old full-back endured a disappointing night at the Nou Camp.
"Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture," the club said in a statement.
"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them."

Solskjaer laments 'poorest' performance

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United team had taken "a big step backwards" after turning in the worst display of his four-month reign, as Wolves sent them packing from the FA Cup with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Marcus Rashford's added-time strike was not enough as Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota fired Nuno Espirito Santo's side into their first semi-final appearance since 1998.
This was United's second straight defeat and Solskjaer conceded "quite a lot was missing today" from his players, who were second-best at Molineux.
The United caretaker manager said: "It was the poorest performance we've had.
"We never had the urgency and quality on the ball, even though without the ball in the first half, we did okay.
"There was a lack of urgency going forward and a lack of forward passing and a lack of regains.
"We felt too comfortable in possession and we never managed to put their goalkeeper or defenders under pressure. Today, we got what we deserved because we never deserved to win this game."

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, interim Manchester United boss, on his team's poor display in the loss to Wolves in the FA Cup.

However, the Norwegian was still upbeat for the rest of the season, claiming that United had "much to play for" as they aim for a top-four finish in the Premier League and progression past Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League.
He said: "We're in a great position in the league, we've got the Champions League. You can't sulk for too long. We've got to look forward and put the result today behind us.
"Manchester United in April and May always find their form. We can't wait for the challenge when Barcelona come."
While Solskjaer will not lift any domestic silverware this term, newly promoted Wolves, who had upset Liverpool in the third round, are in with a huge shout of winning their first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1980.
And Santo, who has yet to win a major honour in his managerial career, paid tribute to "the amazing support of our fans believing in us", with the 12th man playing its part in spurring his players on against the Red Devils.
The Portuguese said: "It means a lot of course. The FA Cup is the oldest competition and we played well.
"The noise was fantastic. We achieved it together. Now, we have to prepare for the next one."
Wolves captain Conor Coady also felt it was "a deserved result" as the home side "nullified them from start to finish".
He added: "We were outstanding. They are an unbelievable club with talented players, (but) we said before in the changing rooms, we have the chance to make history and we now have the chance to go through again."

Blueprint to beat Manchester United

Blueprint to beat Manchester United

LONDON • Manchester United have been on a roll since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment with 11 wins from 13 games in all competitions, but Jurgen Klopp believes he has "the blueprint" to inflict their first Premier League loss under the caretaker boss tomorrow.
Who will the Liverpool manager take his cue from? Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions came away from Old Trafford with an impressive 2-0 victory on Tuesday and the German is planning to take a leaf out of Thomas Tuchel's book by keeping a lid on United's "massive, massive" counter-attacks.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Yeah, results-wise, (PSG) were the only team (to beat United so far).
"They were pretty cool with the ball, they passed really a lot and they were really confident, good positioning, passing between the lines.
"Whichever line-up they (United) have, how they attack, whoever it is, will be quick on these offensive wings.
"That's just good and then from time to time, they leave a player up or two, so you need to be really 100 per cent concentrated."

NEW LEASE OF LIFE
They've brought in all the things (former manager) Sir Alex Ferguson stood for. That makes them a threat again. They are really back on track. Good for them.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on resurgent Manchester United.

But stopping United from breaking with pace is a task easier said than done, given that they are the English top-flight's in-form team.
Having last played them in December when they were at their lowest, Klopp credited Solskjaer for the turnaround in their form.
He told reporters: "Jose Mourinho is an outstanding manager, but they had a difficult time and it looks like they found a solution (the Portuguese was sacked after losing 3-1 at Anfield). It's a big difference of course (then and now). Different team, different style."
The German also lent his voice to the growing calls for the Norwegian to be made United's permanent manager after masterminding "one of the best records ever".
Klopp said: "I'm really happy for him. It's not the best news for us, but for all Manchester United fans, it's brilliant.

"They've brought in all the things (former manager) Sir Alex Ferguson stood for.
"That makes them a threat again. They are really back on track. Good for them.
"We see that with (Paul) Pogba and with (Ander) Herrera in outstanding shape. They were all good before and now, they are full of confidence and use their potential.
"Now, he's (Solskjaer) in charge and there's no doubt he will be the manager next year as well. That is clear. He deserves (the job) 100 per cent. Can you imagine if they brought in a new manager?"

But Klopp is determined to take advantage of their "best moment for a number of weeks", even though Dejan Lovren will be missing with a hamstring injury.
This is shaping up to be a crucial period of the Reds' season - they have a midweek league game at home to Watford, followed by the Merseyside derby at Everton next Sunday.
Klopp said: "It's very good to have Virgil (van Dijk, who was banned for their Champions League game against Bayern Munich) back. It's not that we go there (to Manchester) and we are a weak opponent... we are a pretty well-organised football team with a lot of potential.
"If we can (live up to it), then it will be a tough one for United."

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola's 100th Premier League game had looked to be a mere formality after Sergio Aguero's opener against Newcastle after only 24 seconds - the quickest Premier League goal this season.
However, his players failed to build on their lightning start as Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Tuesday to put their title defence in jeopardy.
Although Guardiola, who is now facing the hardest challenge of his stewardship, insisted post-game the title race was not over as "there are still many games and anything can happen", there seemed to be a hint of resignation with leaders Liverpool in the box seat.
He said: "We had a chance today to reduce the lead. Tomorrow is a game for our opponents. When you are behind, you have to win games and we couldn't do that."
Denying that the English champions had underestimated Newcastle, he added: "We'd never do that and that's the reason why we're still in four competitions. That's why we recorded 100 points last season.
"It's just sometimes, we don't play at the level we want to play and that can happen, that's something I understand completely."
But after admitting "it was not our best night" with their flat and careless display on Tyneside, talk of an unprecedented quadruple will be on the back-burner for now .
The Spaniard said: "I know the challenge is big, being in all competitions is what it is. If you want to go up as a club, you have to accept that challenge. I prefer to be in that position."

THERE IS STILL TIME
A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Man City manager, keeping his chin up despite expecting Liverpool to beat Leicester last night.

It must have come as a real surprise to him after a sluggish City conceded for the first time since Roberto Firmino netted on Jan 3. It was a series of 30 unanswered strikes before Salomon Rondon's and Matt Ritchie's spot kick on Tuesday.
Guardiola added: "We didn't make a good performance. We didn't take the rhythm of the game, it was slow and we weren't aggressive enough.
"The game was not good. We did not defend the second ball well, we have to improve."
Conceding "next week will be tough" - City have to play Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea in seven days - he challenged his side to rise to the occasion as there were "a lot of titles and points to play for".
The 48-year-old also attempted to put a spin on the upset and their tricky run of upcoming fixtures as they "were still in January", and so, there could be plenty more twists and turns in Liverpool's bid to end a 29-year wait to win the league.
He said: "There's a lot of time but of course, when you're behind the leaders, you don't want to drop points and every game is one less.
"A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
"In our case, we will do our best to be there and not to give up."
With City's unremitting pressing and cutting interplay curiously absent against Rafa Benitez's men, it meant he also missed out on an outright record of achieving most wins in the league era by any manager in their first 100 games.
Instead, he will now share that landmark with his old rival and former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who won 73 of his first 100 games with Chelsea.
