Top striker wanted to beat the Blues

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri admitted Chelsea need attacking reinforcements after they wasted a chance to cement their place in the Premier League's top four with a 0-0 draw against struggling Southampton on Wednesday.
Alvaro Morata was back in the league starting XI for the first time since the defeat at Wolves on Dec 5, replacing the injured Olivier Giroud. But he fluffed two good chances and had another contentiously ruled out for offside.
Eden Hazard was twice denied by 22-year-old goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who had a top-flight debut to remember for the Saints, rejuvenated under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Blues, the lowest scorers in the top six with only 38 goals, failed to score for the third time in their last five home league games.
The tepid and one-paced performance raised more questions about the need for a top-class striker on a day they splashed out £58 million (S$99.7 million) on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Christian Pulisic.
"The club knows my opinion. I think we need something else for our (attack)," Sarri said when asked if he would consider recalling on-loan forwards Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham.
It was only last week that the Italian said he would not enter the market for a centre forward.

Chelsea's league goal tally, the lowest among the Premier League's top six.

He made it clear the responsibility for new signings lies with owner Roman Abramovich, saying: "It depends on the board, not on me. I have to think of the training. I have to try to improve my players in the offensive phase.
"We played a good match for 80 minutes, then we were in trouble in the last 20. We have to try to solve the problem. We were in control of every match recently, but it was not easy to score the first goal."
Hazard has often been cast in the centre forward's role, with Morata scoring only seven goals this term and none in the league since Nov 4.
On his recall, the former Real Madrid star looked completely bereft of touch and confidence.
Hazard looked more vibrant back in his favoured winger role, but failed to torment the Saints once again despite having been involved in seven goals against them in the last six matches in all competitions.
While successive away wins at Watford and Palace made it a happy Christmas for Chelsea, their first home game of the new year was a lot like their last in 2018.
Despite dominating Leicester on Dec 22, they were beaten 1-0 as they failed to break down the visitors' defence.
The boos rang out at full-time as Cesc Fabregas, who came on as a 68th-minute substitute for his 500th club appearance in English football, was waving to the home fans. He wants to join Monaco this month and hopes the club can sign a replacement.
Chelsea remain in fourth on 44 points, just three ahead of Arsenal in the race to qualify for the Champions League. And they still have to visit both the Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Eleven stays afloat in Britain

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of sport", has saved its operations in the fiercely competitive Britain and Ireland markets from closure after reaching deals to offload the rights to Italy's Serie A and continue coverage of Spain's LaLiga.
In December, it emerged that the streaming service, which is thought to have attracted 50,000 subscriptions since its August launch, was unable to attract enough subscribers.
The company, which stopped its pay-TV operations in Singapore and became unavailable on Singtel TV from August last year, attempted to renegotiate rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and avoid pulling the plug.
It has now concluded talks with IMG, which acts as the agent for Serie A rights, with the Britain and Ireland rights to move to Premier Sports from next month until 2021.
Premier Sports also picked up the rights to the Dutch Eredivisie and Chinese Super League from Eleven.
Eleven has also concluded a new agreement with LaLiga, giving it temporary breathing space to keep broadcasting matches until the end of the season. In the summer, it will have to negotiate another deal.
"The strategic direction we have chosen allows us to focus on LaLiga, which not only drives real value for us in the UK and Ireland but is also a property which we continue to have a valued partnership with in five markets globally," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports, which is controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani.
The Italian businessman said last December that Eleven could not rely on Internet subscribers alone to make its British venture work and is working out distribution deals for his channel.
Eleven said that as a result of the cutback in sports content, existing and new subscribers will see the price of its monthly pass reduced from £5.99 (S$11) to £4.99 from next month.
Last November, it struck a deal with Scottish broadcaster STV to show two live LaLiga and Serie A games a week through its online streaming service. Last October, it was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders.
Eleven, which had outbid Sky and BT, Britain's two largest sports broadcasters, for the rights that the two companies had previously owned, said that despite the setbacks it is still looking for new sports rights deals.
Endeavour, the Hollywood talent agency which owns Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the increasingly popular mixed martial arts competition, and IMG hold a minority stake in Eleven Sports UK & Ireland. Eleven, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser, which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
Late last year, UFC opted to move back to previous rights holder BT with a new broadcast deal.

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) -Sergio Aguero's penalty gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 27) to stay a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Felipe Anderson was ruled to have brought down Bernardo Silva and Aguero coolly slotted home from the spot.
Former City manager Manuel Pellegrini set his West Ham team up to frustrate the hosts and they did an excellent job for most of the game, forcing City into wide areas where they struggled to create openings.
City camped in the visitors' half for the opening 45 minutes with David Silva going close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post after an excellent low cross.
West Ham went close after the break when substitute Manuel Lanzini found Andy Carroll at the back post, but City keeper Ederson did well to parry the forward's well-struck effort.
City boss Pep Guardiola promptly threw on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva from the bench and they changed the tempo and flow of the game.
Second-placed City have 68 points while leaders Liverpool are on 69.

Football: Man City lose again after Ricardo stunner for Leicester

LEICESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat by Leicester City on Wednesday (Dec 26) as Ricardo Pereira's superb late strike condemned the champions to a second successive Premier League loss.
City, beaten 3-2 by Crystal Palace last time out, were in front after 14 minutes when Bernardo Silva finished with his left foot after being played through by Sergio Aguero.
But four minutes later Leicester were back on level terms after Marc Albrighton met Jamie Vardy's cross with his head from close range.
Leicester's defence held tight despite an onslaught from City, with Fabian Delph and Aguero both missing good chances.
Pep Guardiola's team were made to pay for those spurned opportunities as Ricardo unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left corner beyond Ederson less than 10 minutes from time.
Things went from bad to worse for City as Delph was shown a straight red for following through in a challenge on Ricardo, capping a miserable afternoon for Pep Guardiola's team who slipped to third in the table.
"It was a similar performance to the Crystal Palace game, we started well but conceded a goal the first time they arrived in our box. Mentally we are lacking confidence in that situation," Guardiola told the BBC.
"We have to accept it, we have to realise that we have to work harder and try to get immediately one good result and get our confidence back.
"Of course, we are worried (about not keeping clean sheets), the result is what counts, we lost."
Leicester manager Claude Puel was facing questions about his future at the club before Saturday's win over Chelsea.
"A good Boxing Day! We know when you play Chelsea and City it's difficult to have the ball but you must have this mentality to defend together and try to use good recovery and fast passes to break," he said.
"We deserved this result. We had more chances than them. We changed the system to get a better balance in the team and it is a fantastic result for this team."

Football: We are all Koulibaly: Napoli fans don masks to support racism victim

MILAN (AFP) - Thousands of Napoli fans showed their support for Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly who was subjected to racist chanting at Inter Milan in midweek by wearing masks and holding up his picture before their team's Serie A game against Bologna on Saturday (Dec 29).
Posters with the message "Siamo Tutti Koulibaly" ("We are all Koulibaly") were visible throughout the Stadio San Paolo during the game which the hosts won 3-2.
Napoli's French-born player Koulibaly was targeted by monkey noises and racist chants at the San Siro on Wednesday, before being sent off for sarcastically applauding the referee.
Serie A returned to action three days after the violent clashes in Milan during which an Inter supporter died after being hit by a car.
And fans showed their solidarity with Koulibaly, wearing masks with the player's face, as well as t-shirts bearing his name.
The home fans also displayed a banner on front of the stadium, "We are all Koulibaly: no to racism!," with flyers in the stadium reading "Koulibaly big brother" or "We're with you Kalidou".
Among them a very young fan held up a poster with: "I'm small, but a man like Koulibaly".

On the pitch, Napoli's Algerian defender Faouzi Ghoulam wore Koulibaly's number 26 shirt in warm-up with the Senegalese player suspended after his sending off on Wednesday.
"It doesn't matter the colour of the skin. It doesn't matter religion. It doesn't matter what team you're rooting for. Football, like all sports, is a game. And all the games are passion, fun, freedom: And in freedom we are all alike! Tomorrow we will all be Koulibaly!," Ghoulam tweeted before the match.
European football governing body Uefa said that the correct anti-racism protocol had not been followed during the midweek game.
And Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Saturday that they would have been in favour of the match being suspended temporarily.
"There was a bit of confusion after Milan, we never asked for the suspension, but three times a temporary interruption.
"Uefa confirmed that we are right, it surprises me that the president of the referees federation disagrees.
"I hope it will never happen again or we will walk off the pitch." Ancelotti added: "50,000 people calling Koulibaly's name is quite a show, there has been a good feeling throughout the city.
"Kalidou is very popular, he has had messages from many sportsmen and it is a sign that it is not so difficult to improve things."
