Football: Griezmann stars as France hammer Moldova

CHISINAU (AFP) - Winger Antoine Griezmann scored one and set up another as World Cup winners Frances easily beat Moldova 4-1 in Chisinau in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday (March 22).
The Atletico Madrid attacker opened the scoring in the 24th minute of the Group H encounter before crossing for Raphael Varane to double the scores three minutes later.
Olivier Giroud equalled David Trezeguet as Les Bleus' third highest scorer of all time with his 34th international goal nine minutes before the break and Kylian Mbappe completed the rout with three minutes left, before Vladimir Ambros claimed a late consolation for Moldova.
Left-back Layvin Kurzawa was the only member of the starting lineup without a World Cup medal as Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman pulled out during the warm up with a muscle issue and was replaced by Blaise Matuidi.
Griezmann had the best of the early chances but his effort from far out failed to threaten Alexei Koselev in the home side's goal after 17 minutes.
The shaggy-haired wide-man scored his 27th goal for France seven minutes later, Manchester United playmaker Paul Pogba picking Griezmann out inside the box with a perfectly timed chip before he hit a lob first time to beat a flat-footed Koselev.
Griezmann then turned provider, his corner finding centre-back Raphael Varane, who headed to double the visitors' advantage at the Zimbru Stadium.

 
 
Giroud put to bed when he met late call-up Matuidi's cross a left-footed volley.
Giroud missed an opportunity to move ahead of Trezeguet's record 34 goals shortly after the break, when his header from a Griezmann cross flew past the post.
Pogba could have added a second assist to Griezmann's account but his header was parried away superbly by Koselev on 70 minutes, and the Manchester United man went close again with 11 minutes left when his shot could only find the side-netting.
Kylian Mbappe succeeded where Pogba failed on 87 minutes.
Lemar's challenge on Eugeniu Cebotaru fed the Paris-Saint Germain forward who easily beat keeper Koselev.
The hosts claimed a consolation goal with 90 seconds of normal time remaining when midfielder Ambros capitalised on a rebound off the post to fire past Hugo Lloris.
Next up for France is Iceland on Monday, while as Moldova, who are yet to qualify for an international tournament, head to Turkey.

LONDON • On the finest of margins can matches, and even seasons, turn. Tottenham were labouring against their rivals, seemingly out of ideas against an Arsenal team that led through Aaron Ramsey and had executed manager Unai Emery's game plan to the letter.
Spurs were staring at a third consecutive Premier League defeat and the last time that happened was in 2012.
The implications were grave. Mauricio Pochettino had conceded that the title was out of reach for his team after the losses at Burnley and Chelsea. But another reverse would have imperilled their top-four hopes while simultaneously encouraging Arsenal's.
Then Christian Eriksen floated in a 73rd-minute free kick and everything changed.
Harry Kane was in an offside position but, contentiously, it was not spotted. If the Spurs striker had not been ahead of the line, perhaps Shkodran Mustafi would not have felt the need to barge him.
But he did and when the penalty was awarded, Kane duly scored his ninth goal in nine north London derbies and the match ended 1-1.

There was still time for another twist with another controversial penalty awarded.
This time, it was for Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the substitute, had the position on Davinson Sanchez and there was some tussling but the Spurs defender did not appear to trip him.
Nonetheless, after going down, Aubameyang found himself standing over a last-gasp kick to win it and give Arsenal a sixth win in seven league games.
However, Hugo Lloris read his intentions and dived to save.
There was more.
When Alex Iwobi crossed from the rebound, Aubameyang looked set to convert from close range - only for Jan Vertonghen to make a last-ditch challenge.
At the very end, another Arsenal substitute, Lucas Torreira, was given a straight red card for a high and out-of-control lunge at Danny Rose.
When the dust settled and the points were shared, Spurs could reflect on having stopped the rot and Arsenal nursed feelings of what might have been.
"If we assess the game, I think we were better than Arsenal," Pochettino said.
"I think it was a fantastic atmosphere for us. I think that after two defeats, it was important today to build up our positive way."
Emery felt that Kane's penalty should not have been given.
"You prepare one match, thinking of the best performance but different situations can happen in 90 minutes," the Arsenal boss said.
"One month ago I said to everybody my opinion: VAR (video assistant referee) is coming to help the referees.
"It's very difficult for the referees. To analyse with the TV is very easy.
"VAR I think will help them, and maybe today's match would be different."

BURNLEY (AFP) - Pep Guardiola declared Sergio Aguero "a legend" after the forward became the first player since Thierry Henry to score 20 Premier League goals in five successive seasons.
Aguero struck in the 63rd minute to secure Manchester City's 1-0 win away to Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday (April 28) that saw the English champions return to the top of the table.
City's 12th successive league victory took them to 92 points, one clear of second-placed Liverpool with both clubs still having two league matches each to play this season.
Aguero has managed 230 goals in eight years with City, making him far and away the club's all-time top scorer, and the 30-year-old Argentina striker has played a key role in the three league titles they have won during that period.
"He is a legend; he does that all the time, score important goals for us," Guardiola said. "He is an incredible player."
City remain on course to finish the season with an unprecedented domestic treble; having won the League Cup in February, they return to Wembley to play Watford in the FA Cup final on May 18.
Failure to defeat Burnley would have handed Liverpool the initiative in the title race, but City overcame spirited opposition to keep matters in their own hands.
Aguero, who had seen an earlier chance blocked by Tom Heaton, scored after turning on to Bernardo Silva's low cross and fashioning a shot that Matt Lowton looked to have blocked, only for the ball to loop up off the defender's chest and cross the line before he could clear it - although goal-line technology was needed before the goal was awarded.

 
 
 
City were denied a second by a superb goal-line clearance from Ben Mee, who stretched to clear off the line after substitute Gabriel Jesus had rounded Heaton.
Guardiola was delighted with the solidity of his team, who won without their key midfielder Fernandinho and the creativity of Kevin de Bruyne.
"Here in the most typical English stadium, we didn't concede one corner," Guardiola said.
"It is not easy, especially after our (Champions League) defeat against Tottenham, but our reaction has been outstanding, without Kevin, without Fernandinho, to come here and play the way we played."
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss added: "There are just two games left. It is tough for Liverpool, it is tough for us - with 91, 92 points, still not champions."
Guardiola suggested that City's task at Turf Moor was made tougher by the dryness of the pitch, although he made clear this was not a complaint.
"In the first half, the pitch was so dry and we had problems moving the ball because the grass was so high," Guardiola explained.
"But when the opponents come to the Etihad Stadium, we put the stadium like we want. When we go away, they do what they want. That is why I like the Premier League."
Burnley had little more than 30 percent possession, yet still had the best first-half chance, with Chris Wood failing to control Jeff Hendrick's through ball and allowing goalkeeper Ederson off his line to smother.
City, who piled intense pressure on Burnley's goal in the first 20 minutes of the second half, did sit off to protect their lead after that - a source of pride for Burnley boss Sean Dyche.
"In the closing minutes, I heard Pep Guardiola screaming 'get it in the corner'," said Dyche.
"Even the best sides have to do it. I thought it was refreshing to hear a top manager scream that to his players."

Singaporean Akbar Nawas has been named the I-League's best coach after leading Chennai City to their first title earlier this month.
The Indian team swept seven out of 10 categories at the I-League awards and trophy presentation ceremony at the Taj Corramandel in Chennai on Wednesday.
Akbar received the Syed Abdul Rahim Best Coach Award, while Chennai's Spanish imports Roberto Eslava, Nestor Jesus Gordillo and Pedro Manzi were named the league's best defender, midfielder and forward respectively.
With 21 goals, Manzi shared the top-scorer award with Churchill Brothers' Willis Plaza. He was also voted the league's best player.
Akbar and his assistant K. Balagumaran have been credited for transforming Chennai from relegation stragglers last season to champions this year as they reaped the rewards for preaching and practising an attacking style of football.
Akbar, 43, told The Straits Times: "It has been a great season to remember, and the award was made possible because of my players, who did their job on the pitch to win the league.
"After finishing second with Tampines Rovers in Singapore (2016) and Global Cebu in the Philippines (2017), there is huge personal satisfaction in winning the league title with Chennai in India and helping them reach the AFC Champions League qualifiers."

Chennai also received a congratulatory message from Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
In a letter addressed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), he wrote: "I was delighted to hear that Chennai City FC have been crowned 2018-19 I-League champions. This is, no doubt, the result of effort and hard work, and everybody involved can be proud of this great achievement. I encourage them to continue working with determination and motivation.
"On behalf of the entire football community, I take this opportunity to thank Chennai City FC and your federation for helping spread the positive message of football and foster the practice of this beautiful game that unites us all."
The achievement of Akbar and Balagumaran has not gone unnoticed by the AIFF and the duo are said to be on its radar for the vacant India national coach position.
Akbar admitted that he has been approached by other teams, but he is keen to take Chennai forward in the new 20-team Indian Football League next season that will unify the I-League and the Indian Super League.
"I have received offers and I'm in discussions with my club owner about the future," said Akbar.

PARIS (REUTERS) - Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player in 45 years to reach 50 Ligue 1 goals as Paris St Germain beat visiting Nimes 3-0 on Saturday (Feb 23) to stretch their lead at the top to 17 points.
Christopher Nkunku's opener and Mbappe's second half-double maintained PSG's 100 per cent home record in the league this season and lifted them further clear of second-placed Lille who drew with Strasbourg on Friday.
Nkunku put the capital club in front five minutes before the break when he expertly controlled Marco Verratti's ball over the top before producing a composed finish.
Mbappe had two goals ruled out in the first half, one for offside and one for handball, but made amends after the interval as he finished from close range on 69 minutes to mark his half century in the French top flight before finishing off a sweeping counter-attack.
At the age of 20 years, two months and three days, the France striker became the youngest player since Yannick Stopyra in 1982 to reach the 50-goal landmark.
PSG lead the standings on 68 points with 22 wins from 25 games. Nimes are in 11th place with 36 points.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Kevin De Bruyne's timely return to action for Manchester City is a major boost for Pep Guardiola as his team brace for a punishing programme over the festive period.
The Belgium international, who has been limited to just 96 minutes of league football so far this season, started the midweek League Cup quarter-final against Leicester, which City won on penalties.
He completed 70 minutes in only his second outing since injuring his knee for a second time this season in a League Cup tie with Fulham on Nov 1 and scored City's goal in the 1-1 draw.
"I've been out so long, so to play 70 minutes is a really good sign for me personally," he told the club's official website. "I feel a little bit stiff but I'm happy to contribute again."
City's home match in the Premier League against Crystal Palace on Saturday (Dec 22) is the first game in a run of six matches in 16 days in three competitions so Guardiola will be desperate to have all his major stars at his disposal.
In more good news for the City boss, Sergio Aguero also returned to action in midweek after being out since late November with a groin problem.
But it is the pending return to full fitness of De Bruyne that will most excite City supporters, even if a record of 14 wins, two draws and a loss from their opening 17 league games hardly suggests the team has struggled in his absence.
De Bruyne put in a huge effort last season for his club, featuring in 52 league and cup games for City and was named their player of the season.
He also faced a punishing international schedule, which culminated in Belgium finishing third at the World Cup - the sheer number of games for club and country sparked concerns from Guardiola that De Bruyne had not had enough rest during the summer.
When he picked up a ligament injury in his right knee in training just one game into the new season such fears seemed well-founded - he then hurt his left knee against Fulham soon after returning to action.
The player, however, believes he was the victim of bad luck.
"I played the most of anyone last year - in the whole world," said De Bruyne. "And I played the World Cup without a problem.
"I think the most important thing is having a summer break - if you have that you can feel OK but there is always a time in someone's career where you feel a bit less.
"But I felt all right, it was just a shame that when I came back after one week I was out for two-and-a-half months. I was happy to come back and worked really hard but after three games it happened again."
The 27-year-old is upbeat despite his disrupted season and is preparing to help second-placed City in their title defence.
"There's nothing I can do - it was two accidents," he said. "I'm happy with my body because I know I have no problems with muscles. They were both just accidents, the second time also. I felt my knee and it pops, so you just work hard and try to be back as soon as possible."

LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino is shocked at receiving a two-game touchline ban and a £10,000 (S$17,800) fine for his conduct following the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Burnley last month.
The Tottenham manager confronted referee Mike Dean after the game and will consequently watch their next two matches from the directors' boxes - at his former club Southampton today and Liverpool on March 31.
He outlined his disappointment at the sanction, of which he was informed on Tuesday, and will assess the Football Association's written explanation before deciding whether to appeal.
"I am a little bit in shock because I think it's completely unfair," he said. "But what can I do now? Nothing. We still don't know the reasons because the letter (of explanation) still hasn't arrived.
"Of course it wasn't the best way to complain or talk with the referee, but I never expected this type of situation. That, for me, is not fair. I need to see the reasons why, and then we'll see what happens."
The Argentinian said his punishment for a first major offence since arriving in England six years ago does not reflect the attitude he has shown in that time.
"It's my seventh season in England and you can see my behaviour from day one, talking in public and private," he added.
"I was a coach, a manager, a person who wanted to help the Premier League and the FA; someone who tried to understand and behave my best to help the referees.
"It's my first time here that I'm maybe not completely right in my behaviour, but I feel this is too much."
Assistant manager Jesus Perez, first-team coach Miguel D'Agostino and goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez will be directing from the touchline today, with Pochettino communicating by walkie-talkie.
On a more positive note, Dele Alli could return today after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Kieran Trippier is likely to miss out with a gluteal muscle strain, while Harry Winks is struggling with the groin complaint that cut short his involvement in the 1-0 midweek win at Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
Asked about Ralph Hasenhuttl's progress since he was appointed as Saints boss in December, Pochettino said: "My wish is for Southampton to finish in a very good way. He is doing a very good job.
"Of course I want to beat them but I wish them all the best."
His team are winless in their last three league games, having drawn with Arsenal after successive defeats at Burnley and Chelsea.
They are three points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United (58 points), with Arsenal (57) and Chelsea (56) close behind.
The Saints, on 27 points, are two better off than 18th-placed Cardiff in the fight against relegation.
