Football: Valencia to face Barca in Copa final after seeing off Betis

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Valencia set up a Copa del Rey showdown with Barcelona as they reached the final for the first time in 11 years by beating Real Betis 1-0 at a bouncing Mestalla on Thursday (Feb 28) where a second-half Rodrigo Moreno strike gave them a 3-2 aggregate win.
Valencia, who lifted the trophy on their last appearance in the showpiece match in 2008, will meet 30-times winners Barca in the final on May 25 at Betis' Benito Villamarin stadium.
Marcelino's side fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg and a goalless home draw would have seen them through on away goals. They appeared set up to absorb the pressure, inviting Betis to have most of the possession.
The visitors had the better of the chances in a tight and tense first period and it took a strong hand from Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech to turn over a shot from Jese, while Betis defender Aissa Mandi headed narrowly wide following a corner.
Valencia showed more ambition after the interval and went ahead with a well worked move in the 56th minute which saw Kevin Gameiro race into the box and slide the ball across for Moreno to comfortably tuck it into the empty net from close range.
That meant Betis needed at least two goals to progress and, while they continued to monopolise the ball, Valencia controlled the space and rarely looked like letting their lead slip.
Barca, who have won the last four editions of the competition, beat Real Madrid 3-0 away on Wednesday for a 4-1 aggregate victory in the other semi-final.

Football: Willian gem sinks Newcastle as Chelsea cement fourth place

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri warned his Chelsea stars to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win over struggling Newcastle on Saturday (Jan 12).
Sarri's side took the lead through Pedro's early goal, but Ciaran Clark snatched a shock equaliser before half-time.
With Chelsea fans beginning to lose patience at their team's latest spluttering home display, Willian lifted the mood in the nick of time with his superb second-half curler.
Fourth-placed Chelsea have won five of their last seven league matches and sit six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who lost at West Ham earlier on Saturday.
But, while Chelsea remain in control of the race to qualify for the Champions League, this was a far from convincing performance.
Labouring to beat third-bottom Newcastle showed how far Chelsea have to go to bridge the gap in class to leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City.
Sarri admitted he was frustrated with the way Chelsea took their foot off the gas after the opening goal.
"We started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought 'now it is easy', but it wasn't," Sarri said.
"We slept for 25 minutes and then we were in trouble. We were better in the second half but we need to improve the mental reaction.
"It is very difficult to understand. We stopped playing and then we had problems."

Sarri also revealed he has told Chelsea's hierarchy he needs a new midfielder to replace Cesc Fabregas, who joined Monaco on Friday.
"Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position. I need an option for that position," he sad.
"The club knows very well my opinion. It depends on the club decision. I cannot do anything more."
Another winter of discontent is brewing for Newcastle, wo have won only once in their last nine league games.
The Magpies' 18 points is their lowest tally after 22 matches of a top-flight season since they were relegated in 1988-89.
"We have to be better than three teams and if we play like today we can do it," Benitez said of Newcastle's relegation battle.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg was the latest display of attacking impotence from misfiring Chelsea, who had failed to score in their last two home league games.
But it took only nine minutes for the Blues to go in front as Newcastle's five-man defence was carved open with ease.
A fine long pass from Chelsea defender David Luiz caught Clark flat-footed.
Pedro timed his run behind Clark perfectly and held off the centre-back's weak attempt to recover as he lofted a delicate chip over Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka for his seventh goal of the season.
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half-hour, but they switched off at the back as Newcastle almost snatched an equaliser.

MASTERFUL FINISH

Salomon Rondon flicked a header towards Ayoze Perez and he accelerated away from Antonio Rudiger, only to shoot woefully wide with just Kepa Arrizabalaga to beat.
It was a warning that Sarri's men failed to heed and in the 40th minute Newcastle were level.
Matt Ritchie curled over an out-swinging corner and Clark muscled past Luiz to power a superb header past Kepa from 12 yards.
Once again, Sarri stubbornly stuck to his experiment with Eden Hazard as Chelsea's central striker despite the Belgian star's dislike of the tactic.
Hazard has now scored just four times in his last 17 games, suggesting he is much more effective in his natural role on the flanks.
With frustration mounting, a misplaced pass by Jorginho triggered angry moans from Chelsea fans, who booed the team off at half-time.
The atmosphere was on the verge of turning even more toxic until Willian came to the rescue in the 57th minute.
Teed up by Hazard at last making an incisive burst, Willian cut back inside two Newcastle defenders on the left side of the area before curling a masterful finish into the far corner.

LONDON • Fulham were the perfect opponents for a team hoping not to expend unnecessary energy before facing Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United did not have to be at their dashing best yesterday to continue their resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but they still could have scored a hatful as they regained a spot in the top four of the Premier League for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
They settled for a 3-0 win in the end and Solskjaer was able to keep Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard on the bench before United welcome PSG to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday night.
A brace from Paul Pogba and a sensational solo goal from Anthony Martial were enough for the Premier League's form side, who have picked up 25 points from nine games since replacing Jose Mourinho with Solskjaer in December.
Pogba later fired a warning to the chasing pack that they intend "to stay there", adding: "It feels great. That's what we wanted, since Ole came, the top four.
"We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
We have big games coming up, so it won't be easy. But we put in a good performance as a team. When we need three points, we get the three points.
PAUL POGBA, Manchester United midfielder, looking ahead to the coming run of tough fixtures that will likely determine his team's final position at the end of the season.

"When we need three points, we get the three points. But these big games coming up will determine where we end up. I feel great, the team feels good."
While United's supporters revelled in watching the legendary figure in the dugout mastermind another victory, Fulham's fans booed Claudio Ranieri down the tunnel after the final whistle.
The odds are against the team with the worst defensive record in the division, with 58 goals conceded, pulling off a miraculous escape given that they are seven points adrift of 17th place with 12 games remaining.
Craven Cottage, normally such a genteel place to watch a game of football, was an angry place with fans aiming chants of "You don't know what you're doing" at a manager who appears to have run out of ideas after three months in the job.
Curiously, it was the wind, which made the ball move weirdly in the air, and not their opponents that took United a while to get used to.

But it was not long before Pogba decided it was time to take charge in the middle of the park. The France midfielder's authority on the ball settled his teammates and it soon became clear United had a plan to get Martial running at Denis Odoi.
Pogba has been involved in 13 league goals under Solskjaer, scoring eight and creating five, and he eased United ahead with a powerful strike in the 14th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Martial produced a moment of magic in keeping with United's scintillating counter-attacking traditions. The forward started his run just inside his own half as he ignored Odoi's attempts to bring him down, shimmied past Maxime Le Marchand and opened up his body to curl a lovely shot into the far corner.
They added another when strong work from Romelu Lukaku led to Le Marchand bringing down Juan Mata just inside the box.
Pogba dispatched his penalty with aplomb and United spent the final 25 minutes keeping their powder dry for PSG.
Solskjaer said that while there was a chance his tinkering could have backfired, his footballing philosophy was "if you don't risk, you don't win".
The Norwegian said: "I have to trust the players, I didn't feel there was a problem playing any of them."

Women's game could use VAR

Women's game could use VAR
ZURICH • Fifa's organising committee announced on Monday that it would recommend the use of video assistant referee (VAR) technology at the Women's World Cup this summer for the first time.
The decision, which is expected to be approved by the governing Fifa Council when it meets later this month in Miami, is a victory for women footballers, coaches and fans who have highlighted gender equality issues in the international game.
VAR allows the on-pitch referee to consult a colleague viewing video replays to help confirm, or overturn, close calls in a narrow set of instances.
It was fully implemented for the first time at last June's World Cup in Russia, where Fifa hailed its introduction as a rousing success.
But, as the Women's World Cup came into view, Fifa repeatedly declined to confirm whether VAR would be used in that competition, turning the issue into another flashpoint - alongside artificial turf pitches, unequal compensation and bonuses - in the broader gender equity debate in the sport.
On the VAR point, at least, the debate seems finally to be settled. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said last weekend that he supported the use of the technology at the women's event in June, stating it was proving effective at discouraging the type of diving and playacting that often plague tournaments.
"Players now know that it's not just sufficient to have a look where is the referee, so if he doesn't see me, I can simulate, because he or she will be caught," he said. "That's why VAR helps the fight against simulation and diving in a very efficient way."
Zvonimir Boban, the deputy secretary-general of Fifa, also said in a statement: "Based on the thorough work carried out over the past few months, Fifa is happy with the steps taken and the excellent job done by Fifa's refereeing team and the female referees involved.
"We are confident about proposing the use of VAR in France to the Fifa Council, as we are very positive about its implementation."
United States defender and 2015 Women's World Cup winner Becky Sauerbrunn felt the impending implementation was just a matter of common sense.
"For me, it's why not?" she said. "Why not give it to the women if you give it to the men?"

Bale out as he's set to bail out

Bale out as he's set to bail out

MADRID • If Spanish media reports are to be believed, Gareth Bale was named in a Real Madrid squad for the last time on Sunday.
But if that was to be the final time that the club-record signing, who moved from Tottenham for £85 million (S$149 million) in 2013, would pull on the famous white jersey, he was not even given the chance to say goodbye.
The Wales forward remained rooted to the bench for the entire game as Real delivered a suitably dreadful end to their miserable season, slumping to a 2-0 home loss to Real Betis.
Not that Bale appeared too concerned at not getting a parting run-out in front of a Santiago Bernabeu crowd that has jeered him all term.
According to the Daily Mail, the 29-year-old was seen joking with teammate Toni Kroos on the bench and at the final whistle, he failed to acknowledge the fans nor Zinedine Zidane as he headed straight down the tunnel.
In his absence as the lightning rod for the Real faithful's ire, the home support turned their anger towards the other players on the field, who were whistled throughout, as the team ended their league campaign third in the standings on 68 points, their lowest tally since 2002, while suffering 12 defeats for the first time since 1999.
Afterwards, Zidane, whose much-heralded return as Real coach in March has yet to pay off, all but hinted at Bale's departure, saying: "No one can change what he has done for the team, but as a coach, I have to live in the present.

TEAM BEFORE PLAYER
I'm sorry, I didn't give Bale minutes today. But I don't know what's going to happen. If I think a player doesn't fit in the team, I have to do what I think works best.
ZINEDINE ZIDANE, on what may be Gareth Bale's last game for Real Madrid.

"I'm sorry, I didn't give Bale minutes today. But I don't know what's going to happen. If I think a player doesn't fit in the team, I have to do what I think works best."
Expressing his relief he could finally draw a line under their annus horribilis, he added: "The best thing for us is that it's over and we can think about next year. Because things will change, for sure.
"There are no excuses. It has been difficult from the start of the season and now at the end with me. That is the reality."
The Frenchman has promised there will be a squad overhaul in the summer and many have also been tipped to leave, including goalkeeper Keylor Navas, defenders Nacho and Sergio Reguilon, and midfielder Isco.
Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon also thinks Bale is on borrowed time, saying "it is a relationship that will come to an end".
The Spaniard told BBC Sport Wales: "Zidane is not keen on him. It seems it was his last game. It is impossible for him to be here because of the coach and the fans. They think he is not committed and that is a problem. The best thing for him is to move. He should take the opportunity if there is one."
And former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp feels Manchester United should offer Bale an end to his Real hell. The Englishman told the Daily Mail that despite the Red Devils being equally mired in mediocrity with their failure to qualify for the Champions League, "he can turn any club around".
He added: "Whoever signs him will be signing a fantastic player. Manchester United could do with Gareth Bale."

Football: Hazard hits Chelsea hundred in win at Watford

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard scored his 100th and 101st Chelsea goals as Maurizio Sarri's men moved back into the Premier League top four by grinding out a 2-1 win at Watford on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Two of the three goals came in first-half stoppage time as the Belgian's opener was quickly cancelled out by Roberto Pereyra's spectacular strike.
However, Hazard made sure he was the match-winner as he was brought down by Ben Foster and then converted the resulting spot-kick early in the second half to move Chelsea two points ahead of Arsenal in the battle for Champions League qualification.
Despite fuming at Chelsea's lack of focus in losing at Stamford Bridge for the first time in charge of the Blues to Leicester on Saturday, Sarri named the same starting line-up with Hazard again serving as the focal point of the attack ahead of Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata.
Hazard had to wait for his chances to come, but showed why Sarri persists with him through the middle as he coolly rounded Foster to give Chelsea the lead.
Until that point, Willian had the visitors' only clear chance when he also rounded the 'keeper but could only strike the post from a narrow angle.
And Watford will believe they were well worthy of their equaliser just a minute after falling behind.
Jose Holebas's corner perfectly picked out Pereyra on the edge of the Chelsea box and the Argentine connected sweetly on the volley to find the bottom corner.
The hosts had claims for a penalty waved away when Gerard Deulofeu tumbled under a shoulder barge from David Luiz, but there was no controversy when at the other end moments later Hazard was hauled down by Foster.
Hazard picked himself up to dispatch the penalty confidently and by the end Chelsea's margin of victory should have been greater.
Willian and N'Golo Kante drilled low shots inches wide and Foster had to race back to his goal after going forward for a late Watford corner to deny Hazard his hat-trick with the last action of the game.

Gaining an understanding of the Club. Through my limited interaction with the Club's staff, i gained a minor insight about how running a football club works.

Fandi rues missed chances in 1-1 draw
It was encouraging that his team struck back immediately after falling behind, but Singapore's 1-1 draw with Hong Kong in the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship qualifier yesterday still left a sour taste in coach Fandi Ahmad's mouth.
The national Under-22 side carved out chances but were not clinical enough to make them count in their opening Group G game at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
"We are quite disappointed with the result," Fandi, 56, lamented.
"I thought we could have won the game because we had more chances. We had good shots at goal, but the goalkeeper saved or we hit the post."
The Singaporeans dominated most of the game, creating a host of chances from their passing moves but were unable to find the net.
In the 29th minute, captain Joshua Pereira arrived at the far post to meet midfielder Hami Syahin's cross from the right, but he blasted over the bar.
Then in the 42nd minute, striker Ikhsan Fandi broke clear of the defence - only for the goalkeeper to deny him.
Against the run of play, Hong Kong defender Tsui Wang Kit scored in the 52nd minute.
But, within a minute, Fandi's men equalised through centre-back Lionel Tan, who netted from close range after fellow defender Irfan Fandi had headed on Hami's 53rd-minute free kick.
Hami also saw one of his crosses rebound off the post in the second half.
On the wasted opportunities, Fandi added: "In the first half alone, we created three chances. In terms of chances, we created more than them. They had one or two, but we had a mistake amongst our defenders and they scored a goal.
"But we kept going at them. It's a very, very tough game, trying to adapt to the situation here. We are still quite happy with a point, but we could have done better than this."
Singapore will meet North Korea, who defeated hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other Group G game yesterday, in their second match tomorrow.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the Finals in Thailand in January. The top-three finishers will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Fandi concedes that he has little knowledge of the North Koreans, but he wants his players to go all out to get a result.
He said: "We don't know much about DPR Korea. They are very aggressive, very fit. What we can do is to watch them, but I hope we can find more videos of them.
"I know they have been training very hard for three weeks, that's what their coach said.
"We must be prepared; whatever comes, we have to face it. They are a very strong team.
"We are going into this game as underdogs but, hopefully, we can do better and get the three points."
