Football: Man United miss out on top-four spot after 1-1 draw with relegated Huddersfield

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United's hopes of Champions League football next season were ended after an embarrassing 1-1 draw at already relegated Huddersfield on Sunday (May 5).
United have now won just two of their past 11 games in all competitions as Huddersfield ended a run of eight straight defeats despite goalkeeper Jonas Lossl's error handing the visitors an early lead through Scott McTominay.
Terrible defending from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men gave the Terriers something to celebrate in their final home game before heading down to the Championship as Isaac Mbenza levelled on the hour mark.
Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Watford means United fall four points outside the top four with just one game of the season to go.
And failure to beat statistically one of the worst teams ever to play in the Premier League will see further questions raised over the decision to hand Solskjaer a three-year contract in March.
The Norwegian has bemoaned United's lack of goals of late and recalled Alexis Sanchez to his starting line-up for the first time in two months in the search for more firepower.
But the Chilean again failed to live up to his status as the club's highest earner before limping off just before the hour mark.

 
Instead, the visitors had to rely on Huddersfield for a helping hand as McTominay's strike from the edge of the box went straight through Lossl's legs after just eight minutes.
United quickly got the game restarted as they sought more goals to improve their inferior goal difference compared to their rivals for a top-four finish.
However, even against a Huddersfield side that previously registered just 14 points all season, United could not press home their advantage.
Juan Mata curled inches wide after some neat interplay between Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba before Pogba also saw a looping header come back off the crossbar.
Solskjaer had kept faith with David de Gea in goal despite three high-profile errors leading to goals in his previous four games.
Huddersfield did not even test de Gea's nerve until five minutes before the break when Karlan Grant broke clear after an errant clearance from Phil Jones.
However, the Spaniard spread himself well to block a weak finish with his legs.
Huddersfield had scored only nine goals at home all season, but one hopeful punt from Lossl cut United open for the equaliser on the hour mark.
Luke Shaw failed to cut out the Danish goalkeeper's clearance and allowed Mbenza a clear run on goal to slot between de Gea's legs.
A lengthy delay then ensued as a new corner flag was found to replace the one Mbenza kicked over and snapped in celebration.
And the wait at least gave United time to awake from their slumber.
Rashford and teenager Tahith Chong, who replaced Sanchez, forced Lossl into saves low to his left.
Pogba then hit the crossbar for the second time in the game with a curling effort from the edge of the area.
But, in their desperation for a winner, United could have succumbed to another stunning defeat as de Gea was called on to deny Grant a memorable winner.

European minnows want bigger portion of pie

ZURICH • For the 80 teams who qualify for the group stages of European club football, the season starts with a glitzy party at the draw ceremony in Monaco and ends with millions of extra euros in the bank.
But while those clubs cash in on the riches produced by the Champions League and, to a lesser extent, the Europa League, more than 600 top-tier clubs who fail to qualify have to feed off leftovers.
Amid widespread concern that the financial gap between Europe's elite clubs and the rest is still growing, Uefa is being asked by the continent's domestic leagues to alter the way it distributes the huge revenue from its competitions.
European Leagues, its umbrella organisation, says in a report that it wants the unlucky 600 to get a larger slice of the cake.
Uefa's club competitions are expected to rake in €3.25 billion (S$5.1 billion) this season but the manner in which that money is distributed has become increasingly contentious. The 32 Champions League teams will share €2.04 billion, with Europa League participants receiving €510 million.
Only 7.3 per cent (€237.5 million) will be distributed in so-called "solidarity payments" and split between the remaining 600 clubs.
The report, which has been sent to Uefa and the continent's 55 national associations, said this was down from 8.5 per cent in the previous cycle from 2015 to this year.

"The financial gap between participating clubs and non-participating clubs is increasing, creating a negative effect on competitive balance," it warned, pointing out that the percentage was more relevant than absolute amounts.
The report proposed that the solidarity payments be increased to 20 per cent in the next cycle, which will cover the period 2021 to 2024.
Based on an estimated revenue of €3.3 billion a season, it said this would provide €660 million for those who missed out on European competition. Breaking down the figures further, it proposed that 3.5 per cent (€116 million) be distributed among clubs eliminated in qualifying rounds and 10 per cent (€330 million) to clubs who did not qualify at all.
The European leagues also want 6.5 per cent of total revenue to go into a new pillar which would be used to fund professional football development outside the top five countries.
Uefa is expected to decide on revenue distribution by the end of the season. Aleksander Ceferin, president of the governing body, has said his priority is to improve competitive balance.
But he also acknowledges that the big clubs are responsible for the lion's share of the revenue and has admitted it is a difficult subject.

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar has paid a visit to Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris since April 3.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward posted a photo on his Instagram account on Monday (April 8) of himself alongside a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
A date for the 78-year-old's discharge has not been officially announced by the hospital which is based in the Paris suburbs.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 per cent.
The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.
Pele's advisor told AFP on Sunday that he would spend one more night in hospital "as a precaution".

(THE GUARDIAN) - The Football Association has condemned the England supporters who caused mayhem on the streets of Porto on Wednesday (June 5) night as "an embarrassment to the team" - and says they are not welcome in football.
Two England fans were arrested after being baton-charged by police after hurling bottles at local supporters and police in a packed fan zone in Liberdade Square, and another was later arrested as more violence broke out.
With 18,000 England fans expected in Guimarães to see Gareth Southgate's side play the Netherlands in the Nations League semi-finals on Thursday night, the likelihood of more trouble is high, and the FA is warning fans to behave.
"The FA strongly condemns the scenes witnessed in Porto overnight," a spokesman said. "Anyone responsible for these disturbances cannot be seen as true England supporters and are not welcome in football.
"They are an embarrassment to the team and the thousands of well-behaved fans who follow England in the right way. We are liaising with the UK Football Policing Unit."
UK police also condemned what they called "completely unacceptable" behaviour from fans which included smashing a car window, forcing roads to be closed to traffic and singing songs such as F**k The Pope And The IRA and 10 German Bombers.
The most serious incident - which was witnessed by The Guardian -occurred in the large fan zone in Liberdade Square in central Porto after Cristiano Ronaldo had put Portugal one-up in their Nations League semi-final against Switzerland.
A Portugal supporter threw a drink in the air to celebrate after which several drunken England fans retaliated by hurling bottles at the locals and then the police.


As dozens of panicked locals - including many parents with children - ran to take cover in the nearby McDonald's outlet, riot police armed with shields and batons moved in. Shortly afterwards they charged at hundreds of England fans, causing them to flee.
An uneasy peace existed for much of the second half, with the Polícia de Segurança Pública appearing determined not to get involved unless they had no option.
However, troubled flared again after Ronaldo scored his late goals and continued sporadically until the early hours of Thursday morning.
Several England fans said they had been unfairly targeted by police having turned up to watch the match. One supporter showed The Guardian a large welt on his back, which he said had been caused by a police baton.


"I was just watching the match with my mates when it all kicked off," he said. "Someone came at me from the side and whacked me. It's going to be sore tomorrow."
Another England fan in his early 20s had a different view of the police charges. "That was great," he said.
The trouble followed several minor incidents of anti-social behaviour on Monday and Tuesday as thousands of fans England gathered in Portugal.
The Guardian witnessed one Portuguese driver protest to police after a bottle was thrown at his car, smashing his front window, near Ryan's Irish pub.

 
 
 
 
Shortly afterwards dozens of other England fans, singing 10 German Bombers, also blocked traffic, causing police to close one side of the road to traffic.
Deputy chief constable Mark Roberts, National Police Chiefs' Council football policing lead, confirmed that Portuguese police had been forced to deploy riot officers against a group of England fans in the main square area of Porto.
"It is believed the fans had been throwing bottles at Portugal fans who were watching the match in the same area," he said.
"This is the second evening in a row where disorder has occurred in Porto. On Tuesday night there were issues outside a bar, where bottles were thrown and minor damage was caused. It is completely unacceptable.
"The behaviour we are witnessing is incredibly disappointing and again I would point fans towards the recent video from the FA: 'Don't be that idiot'," he added. "The behaviour of a small number of the England fans out here continues to tarnish the reputation of the genuine fans who are simply trying to enjoy the football."

De Ligt heads a list of names that will likely be sold, including Ziyech, who hit the post; David Neres, who was injured during the warm-up; and Donny van de Beek, the first-leg match-winner. Frenkie de Jong has already agreed a blockbuster move to Barcelona.
While captain-defender de Ligt, 19, admitted he "did not know how to recover from this" and that it was "a dream that went bad", he told Dutch TV channel Veronica that Ajax were still going to fight for a domestic double.

Saints fans face ban over Sala taunts

LONDON • Southampton have promised to ban supporters who mocked the death of Emiliano Sala by making aeroplane gestures during their 2-1 Premier League home loss to Cardiff on Saturday.
The game was Cardiff's first since the Argentinian striker's body was identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from underwater wreckage in the English Channel.
After the game at the St Mary's Stadium, a video on social media appeared to show two men in the home section making aeroplane gestures in the direction of the away fans.
Southampton confirmed both fans had been spoken to by police and intended to take "an extremely firm stance" over the incident.
The club added in a statement: "Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary's. The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified."
Cardiff had been given permission to wear shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of Nantes. And a minute's silence in memory of Sala was impeccably observed before an emotional match for the Welsh club.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, his new club, disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
Captain Sol Bamba dedicated his goal and the victory to Sala.
He said: "A lot of things were going through my mind.
"I knew Emiliano. I know he was looking up there. The victory and the goal is for him."
The Ivorian defender scored the 69th-minute opener only for the hosts to equalise in stoppage time. But Kenneth Zohore netted a 93rd-minute winner that took Cardiff out of the relegation zone.
"It has been a tough couple of weeks," Bamba told Sky Sports. "We knew we had to give our all today. It wasn't easy but a performance like this was very pleasing."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock was proud of his side's resilience as he paid his own post-match tribute.
He said: "Emiliano was a fabulous lad, and it's appropriate we came down with our black armbands on and put in a performance like that.
"We could easily have folded, but we were determined.
"We're limited, but you can't question their character and what they've got under their shirts because they've bags of heart."
Pilot David Ibbotson is still missing and the family's crowdfunding effort was boosted by the €27,000 (S$41,500) from French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, who pledged the same amount to the Sala search.

PARIS (AFP) - Lyon dominated struggling Monaco from beginning to end on Sunday (Dec 16) to climb back into the Ligue 1 top three and bury Thierry Henry's side deeper in the relegation zone.
Lyon kept pace with Lille, who won 3-2 at Nimes earlier despite playing much of the match with 10 men.
Lille are three points ahead of Lyon, who have a game in hand, and five ahead of Montpellier, who did not play for a second consecutive week, and have played two fewer matches.
The French title race is all but over with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 10 points clear, but a young Lille side are eyeing a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2012, while Lyon, who squeaked into the last 16 in Europe in midweek, are seeking to ensure they will be back next year.
"This match was one of our most dominant performances in the league," said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. "Even with superiority, we continued to play simply, to work for each other." Lyon took the lead in only the sixth minute with a goal by Houssem Aouar, his sixth of the season.
Nabil Fekir added the second in the 34th minute. Kenny Tete shrugged off a timid challenge to pull back a low cross which Fekir attacked while Monaco's Jemerson hesitated.
Monaco managed only one shot all game. They played almost the whole second half with 10 men after Aleksandr Golovin raked his studs down the back of Fekir's calf in the 47th minute and was sent off.
Ferland Mendy added a deserved third for Lyon just before the hour mark.
"The match in Kiev on Wednesday made us realise that we had a strong group," said Genesio. "And that we had to stop the childish attitudes that we have seen on some matches."
Monaco, the only team in the bottom half of the French league table to play this weekend, meekly wasted a chance to gain ground on their rivals.
"We have to look at the first goal we conceded and especially the second goal which summed up this game," Henry said. "Winning without desire is hard.
"We have to try to put this game behind us, we have a big game against Guingamp next week."
Earlier, in-form striker Nicolas Pepe scored what proved to be the winner as 10-man Lille won at Nimes.
"What a match, I'm really proud of my players," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier. "We must not forget that we played for more than an hour and 20 minutes with 10 men.
"With the added time, it was a very long and hard match physically." Portuguese teenager Rafael Leao headed Lille into a fourth-minute lead, but Galtier's men suffered a setback when former Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte was sent off in the 16th minute.
Jonathan Bamba's deflected effort doubled the advantage shortly before the interval, though, and Pepe appeared to have made the points safe midway through the second half with his 12th goal of the campaign.
"After the PSG strikers, Pepe and Bamba are the best," said Nimes coach Bernard Blaquart.
The 10 men finally started to tire late on, but Lille held on for victory despite Nimes goals from Rachid Alioui and Clement Depres.
